Nathan Crabbe: Opinion Writing and the Future of Journalism
March 14, 2021, 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm
Nathan Crabbe, the opinion and engagement editor for the Gainesville Sun will speak at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 14, via Zoom.
Submitting a letter to the editor or an opinion essay to the Gainesville Sun is one avenue for us writers to use our craft to participate in civic discourse. Nathan Crabbe will give us an inside look at the submission process—what works and what doesn’t—and share his thoughts on the state of print newspapers. He’ll discuss what the “opinion and engagement editor” actually does, the number of submissions the Sun typically receives, how he selects what to print, and how he deals with complaints about his editorial decisions, among other issues. Crabbe will offer a short presentation in order to allow plenty of time for Q&A. So have your questions ready!
At the Sun, Crabbe’s responsibilities include writing opinion columns and editorials along with editing guest columns and letters to the editor. He has been with the paper since 2005, previously working as a reporter on the University of Florida and environmental beats. Before that, he investigated wrongful convictions for the Innocence Institute of Point Park University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and covered the environmental and county beats as a reporter for the Napa Valley Register in Napa, California. He lives in Gainesville with his wife and two children.
