E. Stanley Richardson, Alachua County’s first Poet Laureate and an advocate for social justice, will be WAG’s guest speaker on Sunday, February 9, at 2:30 p.m., at the Millhopper Library.
Richardson is the author of Hip Hop Is Dead – Long Live Hip Hop: The Birth, Death And Resurrection of Hip Hop Activism. This poetry collection “captures the visual eclectic voice and expression of the ‘everyday’ African American experience.”
In his presentation, Richardson will discuss what inspired him to write the book, the creative process, and specific challenges he encountered. He will also read short excerpts from the book.
Richardson has been writing poetry since he was a child and has hosted numerous spoken-word events for residents of north central Florida. He is the founder and director of ARTSPEAKS, dedicated to promoting literacy, bringing awareness, expanding opportunity, and providing a medium for expression through the art of poetry and the spoken word.
The next ARTSPEAKS event will be on Sunday, March 8, 2020, 4:00–7:00 p.m. at the Historic Thomas Center, 302 NE 6th Avenue in Gainesville.
