Beginning in April 1940, German troops blitzkrieg across Europe, overtaking country after country. On June 14, 1940, the City of Light dimmed. Adolf Hitler’s troops goosestepped through Paris’s Arc de Triomphe while French men and women lined the streets, weeping.
