Enslavement in Alachua County

Dr. Courtney Taylor and Karen Kirkman will speak on “Enslavement in Alachua County” at the Haile Homestead on Saturday, February 8, 2025, from 10 a.m. to noon. This is one of four programs in the lecture series “The Other Book: Black History in Alachua County.”

According to Mainstreet Daily News, “Jackie Davis, one of the event organizers, said this series is a reaction against ‘whitewashing’ of Florida history books, and is meant to help Black and white county residents better understand local Black history.” It’s an educational opportunity that should be especially valuable for those writing about history, inequity, and/or cross-cultural relationships within the US.

All are invited to attend. Registering is suggested but is not required. Each session is free, although a donation of $5 per lecture is suggested.

The first lecture, “Dispelling the Myths: Pre-colonial Africa,” was held at the Harn Art Museum on January 11. It was well received by the audience, which included several WAG members. Other programs are:
