SUMMARY:Enslavement in Alachua County
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Courtney Taylor and Karen Kirkman will speak on “Enslavement in Alachua County” at the Haile Homestead on Saturday\, February 8\, 2025\, from 10 a.m. to noon. This is one of four programs in the lecture series “The Other Book: Black History in Alachua County.” \nAccording to Mainstreet Daily News\, “Jackie Davis\, one of the event organizers\, said this series is a reaction against ‘whitewashing’ of Florida history books\, and is meant to help Black and white county residents better understand local Black history.” It’s an educational opportunity that should be especially valuable for those writing about history\, inequity\, and/or cross-cultural relationships within the US. \n\nAll are invited to attend. Registering is suggested but is not required. Each session is free\, although a donation of $5 per lecture is suggested. \nThe first lecture\, “Dispelling the Myths: Pre-colonial Africa\,” was held at the Harn Art Museum on January 11. SUMMARY:Writing a Prequel to a Series - by Marie Q Rogers
DESCRIPTION:  \nNote that this program is being held at the Headquarters Library downtown.\n  \nSo\, you’ve finished your novel and readers ask\, what happens next? That’s when you decide to turn it into a series. Sequels pose their own challenges\, but what if you want to write about what happened before the original story takes place? The prequel? How do you keep characters and events consistent with what has already occurred? Your readers will certainly pick up on any discrepancies. \nPat Caren\, who writes as Marie Q Rogers\, the award-winning author of Trials by Fire and Quest for Namai\, decided that the back story to this series was worthy of being told. She will discuss constraints she encountered in keeping characters\, names\, and events consistent with what had already been written. She will also give you tips on how to craft your story so it will flow seamlessly into the future. \nHer other novels\, Season of the Dove and Notebooks Hidden in an Abandoned House are self-contained stories for which no pre- or sequel is currently planned.

SUMMARY:WAG Members to Vote on Revised Bylaws
DESCRIPTION:A bit of history: On November 16\, 2008\, the Bylaws for the Writers Alliance of Gainesville (WAG) were presented in writing to WAG’s Executive Committee\, signed by then-President Wendy Thornton\, and subsequently approved unanimously by the general membership. Since that date\, WAG has grown from about 50 members to over 200; and the Bylaws have been updated twice\, once in 2015\, and again in 2020. \nAt a June 9\, 2024\, meeting\, the WAG Board approved the latest revision which includes a Code of Conduct for Board Members. WAG members will be asked to approve these Revised Bylaws at the next monthly meeting on Sunday\, July 14\, 2024. \nPlease click here to review the Revised Bylaws. Note that additions/changes are shown in red. In addition to the Code of Conduct for Board Members (Section 5 E) and a few other minor additions\, the document has been made more friendly. For example\, at the suggestion of a highly respected member who was in the original 50\, the word shall is now will when it relates to the duties of numerous volunteer positions. \n  \n

SUMMARY:WAG—Matheson Collaboration to Celebrate Earth Day
DESCRIPTION:Sample postcard\nThe Matheson History Museum and the Writers Alliance of Gainesville (WAG) are joining forces — with postcards and pieces of writing — to celebrate Alachua County’s 200-year anniversary and impact the future. \nThe Matheson has selected 70 postcards from their archives that represent a time capsule of events\, places\, and people of Alachua County over the last 200 years. WAG members are invited to write pieces inspired by these postcards. \nWAG Members: Which postcard will you write about? Access the postcards through this link:  https://bit.ly/WAG-postcards. \nThe future of Alachua County and the future of the world are bound up in the same climate crisis. The United Nations has set 17 Sustainable Development Goals to ensure that we will be here for another 200 years and more. Please take a look at these goals. Which goal might your postcard address? \nNote: These goals are easier to read on the United Nations website. \n \n \nWAG members\, here is how to participate: \n* Pick 3 postcards that inspire you. \n* Email president@writersalliance.org with your 1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd choices by Friday\, March 15. WAG President Jenny Dearinger will email you back to let you know which one of your three choices is being assigned to you. \n* When you receive confirmation of your choice\, write a fictionalized story or poem inspired by the postcard or about what you think might have happened in Alachua County at that time. Your document should be 500 words or less\, in Times New Roman or Calibri font\, size 12-point type\, and double-spaced. \n* Mention/incorporate (or use as a theme) one of the United Nations 17 Climate goals within your story. \n* Submission Deadline: Friday\, April 5\, 2024. \n* Submit your writing to: president@writersalliance.org. \n* Please remember that your story will be made public\, so keep it G-rated. \n* This is not a contest. All submissions that meet the criteria will be accepted. \nWhen/Where will your story be published? By Earth Day\, April 22nd\, 2024\, your story will be published on the Climate Collaboratory website. You will be able to read it and all other WAG authors’ stories and poetry at climatecollaboratory.org. \nIn addition\, the Matheson History Museum will have a juried collection of the stories and other cultural pieces on a virtual exhibit on the museum website in December 2024. Your story may be picked to represent Alachua County’s 200th Birthday and become part of its history! \nPresident Jenny Dearinger will inform participants when the Matheson History Museum makes the choices. \nThank you for your participation! And have fun! \n
