SUMMARY:What We Learned From Our Mistakes
DESCRIPTION:WAG members will participate in a panel discussion about mistakes they have made and what they learned from them. It might be an error made during the writing process\, while critiquing another’s work\, in submitting work for publication\, in contracting with a traditional publisher\, in self-publishing\, or in promoting their works. \nAfter the panel discussion\, the audience will be invited to join in the discussion and ask questions. \nCome participate—or just listen and learn. Hearing about the mistakes of others might help you avoid the same mistakes! \nNote the date (last Sunday of the month). We could not meet on our normal second Sunday because meeting rooms in the library were unavailable. \nThis presentation may be accessed via Zoom at the link below. \nZoom link: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89973131287?pwd=UWc4WXRaaDl0OWVQWmgwbTBiNHdVQT09\n\nMeeting ID: 899 7313 1287\nPasscode: 316819\nOne tap mobile\n+19292056099\,\,89973131287#\,\,\,\,*316819# US (New York)\n+13017158592\,\,89973131287#\,\,\,\,*316819# US (Washington DC)\n\nDial by your location\n        +1 929 205 6099 US (New York)\n        +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n        +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n        +1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\n        +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n        +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\nMeeting ID: 899 7313 1287\nPasscode: 316819\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kM2Sacyxx\n

SUMMARY:Introducing Kindle Vella: The Hot New Publishing Option
DESCRIPTION:Come join us at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday\, June 12\, 2022\, at the Millhopper Library for a discussion of the new subscription service for self-publishers: Kindle Vella. This is a “story subscription service that lets you read serialized works of fiction written specifically for this platform” (https://www.techradar.com/news/amazon-kindle-vella). \nDid you know that Charles Dickens\, Sir Author Conan Doyle\, and Herman Melville all published their original novels in pieces\, either in magazines or journals? Alexandre Dumas stretched out The Count of Monte Cristo into 139 installments. Madame Bovary originally appeared in installments. \nAre you ready to join the historic trend of separating your work into installments for a restless audience? Then\, come to the June 12 meeting to find out how to use Amazon’s new service\, how to upload your work\, what types of work are most popular\, and how you get paid for your work. Don’t miss out. This newest publishing option is taking off fast. \nKindle Vella allows readers to purchase individual chunks of a story and read them when they want. Readers purchase the sections using tokens from Amazon to download a certain number of words. \nRight now\, Kindle Vella seems primarily generated for phones\, but that limitation could change soon. \nThis program will be presented by Marie Q. Rogers (aka Pat Caren) and Wendy Thornton. \nMarie Q. Rogers (Pat Caren)\nRogers studied Literature at Eckerd College and did graduate work at the University of Florida. Her YA novel\, Trials by Fire\, received a 2020 Royal Palm Literary Award. The sequel\, Quest for Namai\, debuted at the 2022 Sunshine State Book Festival. Her dystopian novel\, Season of the Dove can be found on Kindle Vella. Her work has also appeared in Bacopa Literary Review\, Pilcrow & Dagger\, and in the collection\, Local Lives in a Global Pandemic: Stories from North Central Florida. She also posts creative non-fiction on her weblog\, marieqrogers.com. She has served as President of the Writers Alliance of Gainesville\, a judge for the Royal Palm Literary Awards\, and chairman of the Sunshine State Book Festival. \nWendy Thornton\nThornton is a freelance writer who has been published in Riverteeth\, Epiphany\, MacGuffin\, and many other literary journals and books. Her memoir\, Dear Oprah: How I Beat Cancer and Learned to Love Daytime TV\, was published in July 2013.  Her latest book of essays\, Sounding the Depths\, was published in May 2018. The second mystery in her Bear Trapped Series\, Bear Trapped: Blowback\, was published in June 2020\, and the third is due in 2023. She has recently started writing screenplays and has two under consideration in contests. She is currently working on a novel about the Covid epidemic\, Triad\, and a book of essays on how to handle bullying. She teaches writing courses at Santa Fe College\, was nominated for a Pushcart Prize\, and has won many literary awards. In 2009\, she started the Writers Alliance and was the first president of the organization. \nIf you are unable to attend in person\, you may watch via Zoom. SUMMARY:Creating an Author Portrait that Increases Book Engagement
DESCRIPTION:It would be nice if a book description alone influenced people to take a book home. The truth is\, humans are very visual beings\, and although one may not even realize it\, a lot of decision-making on selecting a book\, or deciding to purchase it\, comes from the book’s cover design and author portrait. \nOn Sunday\, May 15\, at 2:30 p.m. Adrienne Fletcher\, owner and head photographer of Adrienne Fletcher Photography\, will discuss (1) why planning an author headshot with intention is important\, and (2) the top things to consider when doing so. These include aspects such as book topic\, author persona\, ideal reader\, image background\, what to wear\, and body language. Adrienne will do a deep dive into exactly what to consider for each step of the process so that creating a headshot that adds value to a book cover feels less stressful\, less uncomfortable\, and more intentional. \nWith a BFA in photography from Savannah College of Art and Design and a Master’s Degree in PR from the University of Florida\, Fletcher has spent over 15 years mastering the art and practice of photography\, and over 10 years working with individuals and teams on marketing\, branding and strategic planning. This unique background allows for the perfect blend of high-quality fine art with a marketer’s eye for detail in her work for her clients. \nIf you are unable to attend in person\, you may watch via Zoom. SUMMARY:Jack E. Davis to Speak at Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park
DESCRIPTION:Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jack E. Davis brings his brand-new book\, The Bald Eagle: The Improbable Journey of America’s Bird\, to Marjorie Rawlings’ famous citrus grove at the edge of Orange Lake. A book the New York Times calls “rollicking\, poetic and wise.”  The talk will be followed by a book signing and discussion by the author\, music\, and light refreshments. Free with standard park admission. \nJack Davis grew up along the Gulf of Mexico\, which figures prominently in his work. He is the author of eight books including An Everglade Providence: Marjorie Stoneman Douglas and the American Environmental Century\, and most recently\, The Gulf: The Making of an American Sea. The Gulf was hailed as a “non-fiction epic” and won the Pulitzer Prize for history in 2018. The Bald Eagle is again history in Jack Davis’ distinctive style—a broad panorama sweeping through five centuries\, from Native Americans living peacefully with the great bird to the venerated symbol of an ambitious new nation and finally the miraculous escape from near extinction in the 20th century—twice! Scott Weidensaul (A World on the Wing) calls The Bald Eagle “a magnificent tribute…bridging patriotism\, Native Spirituality\, environmental carnage and\, against all odds\, ecological redemption.” \nJack E. Davis is the Rothman Family Chair in the Humanities at the University of Florida. He divides his time between Florida and New Hampshire. \n

SUMMARY:Susie Baxter to Speak on Book Design
DESCRIPTION:Note: Daylight savings time begins Sunday\, March 13. Move clocks ahead one hour.\n\n\nOn Sunday\, March 13\, at 2:30 p.m.\, Susie Baxter will share tips she has learned from independently publishing four books in various formats\, from paperback and ebook to hardcover and audible. \nThe main focus of her talk will be on book design using Microsoft Word\, InDesign\, Bookow\, and Vellum software for formatting. But she will also discuss: \n\nFree resources that can help us improve our writing and the final manuscript (critique pods\, Aztekera\, Hemingway\, Grammarly\, and beta readers)\nAdvantages and disadvantages of working with a local printer versus a book publisher\nDifferences between vanity publishers\, hybrid presses\, traditional publishing\, and print-on-demand (POD)\nCosts and tasks associated with independent publishing\, such as the purchase of ISBNs and applying for a Library of Congress Control Number\nHiring editors and proofreaders\nWorking with a narrator on an audible book\n\nA fifth-generation Floridian\, Baxter grew up on a farm in north Florida. In adulthood\, she attended Louisiana State University in New Orleans and the University of South Alabama in Mobile where she earned a BFA. After working for a few years as a graphic artist\, she landed a job with a health-science publishing house in St. Louis. There\, she advanced from editorial assistant to acquisitions editor and finally to the publisher of primary care. During her career\, she commissioned dozens of successful clinical reference books authored by world-renowned physicians. \nShe has now written four books of her own: C.G. & Ethel: A Family History (2008); Write Your Memoir: One Story at a Time (2017)\, a nonfiction how-to book; Pumping Sunshine: A Memoir of My Rural Childhood (2018)\, which won that year’s Royal Palm Literary Award for Memoir and was named 1st runner-up for the Published Book of the Year; and her latest\, I\, Susanette… (2022)\, a coming-of-age memoir. \nBaxter believes that everyone has a story to tell\, and she drives that point home in the memoir-writing course she teaches annually at Santa Fe College in Gainesville. Information on her next course can be found on her website: susiehbaxter.com. \n

SUMMARY:Programs Resume at Millhopper Library: The Juggling Act of Independent Authors
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This is WAG’s first program at Millhopper Library since the COVID pandemic shut it down. Please practice social distancing and follow masking guidelines. If you are unable to attend in person\, join via Zoom (link at the end of this article).\n \n\nFor independent authors\, writing your story is only a part of your juggling act. First\, you identify what you wish to write. Next\, you find the time and a writing routine that is sustainable. After that\, there’s self-promotion to gain the attention of readers\, plus ongoing marketing efforts to sell your books. \nCan you simply rely on your computer expertise and the use of social media? Or do you need to establish a speaking schedule? \nPerhaps it’s a curious balance of all the above and more? Join us on February 13 when independent author William Hatfield will discuss these methods and more. \nFollowing his talk\, Hatfield will be happy to sign a book for you. Check them out on Hatfield’s author page on Amazon. \nHe was born in a small town in northern Michigan and attended Western Michigan University\, obtaining a degree in history and communications. Musical engagements led him to Gainesville\, Florida\, where he continues to live with his wife Karen and their two feline daughters. \nRumor has it\, he may have grown up\, but it seems unlikely. Rumor also has it that on the convention circuit\, no piano is safe from his inclination to cause spontaneous piano-bar singalongs. \nWhether writing science fiction action/adventure or humorous LGBTQ/mysteries based in Key West\, he relishes the opportunity to create interesting and challenging characters that never cease to amuse and surprise him with their inherent independence. \n\nUse this link to join the Zoom meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89973131287?pwd=UWc4WXRaaDl0OWVQWmgwbTBiNHdVQT09\nMeeting ID: 899 7313 1287\nPassword: 316819 \n  \n

SUMMARY:Hugh Suggs to Speak
DESCRIPTION:“Pssst\, want to know a secret?” asks Hugh Suggs. “There’s no bottom you can’t come back from if you are determined to get back up\, are willing to ask for help\, and accept it when it’s offered. \nSuggs will be our speaker on Sunday\, January 9\, at 2:30 p.m.\, in Meeting Room A on the upper level of the downtown library. His poignant story\, “From one Field to Another\,“ won first place for creative nonfiction in the 2019 Bacopa Literary Review. He has now written a powerful memoir dedicated to his illiterate farming father’s struggle\, inside the abject poverty of itinerate farm work\, to raise six children—children who’d go on to become teachers\, county managers\, decorated soldiers\, and successful politicians. \nWritten in novel style in a series of forty vignettes\, the reader walks into Wise’s Drugs with Suggs’s father in 1945 as the storyteller journeys back to his sharecropping roots in order to discover how he became the person who ended up beneath the wheels of a loaded log truck. While he lost his legs in that accident\, he gained an enhanced perspective in his writing. \nHis talk will center around how he combines his open-mic-honed prose poetry with the challenge of writing about a seventy-year journey from his changing perspective; first as that of a gifted child laborer who becomes a budding poet and then as a baggage-carrying\, struggling adult whose bad choices left him beneath those wheels. \nHe will be highlighting this technique by reading excerpts from both his finished manuscript of creative nonfiction\, “Rind and All\,” and performing pieces from a collection of poetry he’s calling “Back on this Side / A Second Chance at Enlightenment\,” whose lines kept finding their way into his memoir’s manuscript. \nThere is free parking around the downtown library and side streets. While the meeting room on the upper level is spacious\, we encourage attendees to wear masks and to socially distance. If the meeting has to change\, we will update this site immediately\, so check back before you go. \nMeeting Room A on Sunday\, January 9\, 2:30 PM – 4:45 PM \n401 East University Ave.\, Gainesville\, FL 32601

SUMMARY:Writer’s Talks at Rawlings House Series Returns to Cross Creek
DESCRIPTION:The Writer’s Talks at Rawlings House Series returns to Cross Creek; under a magnolia tree almost in the shadow of the Pulitzer Prize winner’s home. \nAnn McCutchan brings us her critically acclaimed\, often revealing\, sometimes deeply moving biography of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings herself—The Life She Wished to Live. \n“Come to this biography for the outsized personality\,” Dwight Garner writes in the New York Times. “Stay for a portrait of a woman whose writing meant everything to her.” \nLight refreshments and music begin at 1:30 p.m.; Writer’s Talk at 2:00 p.m. Free with standard park admission. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park at Cross Creek\, Florida. Call 352-466-3672 for more details. \nMade possible by the Friends of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Farm\, the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Society\, and Florida State Parks Department. \nWhat emerges after seven years is the most complete portrait of a very complex life: the long sojourn in Florida’s backcountry and her instinctive affinity for the place and its people; astonishing encounters\, and endearing friendships with the literary galaxy including Ernest Hemingway\, F. Scott Fitzgerald\, Thomas Wolfe\, Robert Frost\, Margaret Mitchell\, and her “magnificent editor\,” Maxwell Perkins; the relationships which helped shape her— from her hugely ambitious mother Ida to her insecure but surprisingly courageous husband Charles Rawlings\, and finally Zora Neale Hurston\, who would bring her to a new understanding of African Americans. Above all\, there is the furiously driven writer. “Rawlings cleared through life as though armed with a machete\,” Jonathan Miles writes in Garden and Gun. “McCutchan gracefully records every chop.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnn McCutchan is the author of five previous books\, most recently Where’s the Moon? A Memoir of the Space Coast and the Florida Dream. She is also a professional musician\, lyricist\, and librettist. Ms. McCutchan lives in Laramie\, Wyoming.

SUMMARY:Mentoring Group to Start Up
DESCRIPTION:A new WAG mentoring group is being formed for novice writers who are in the early stages of their writing careers. This is not a critique pod\, although we may exchange writing feedback at times. The main focus will be both practical and emotional support. \nThe learning curve is steep\, not just for writing craft\, but for things like types of edits available\, pros and cons of self-publishing\, finding an agent\, etc. It can be quite overwhelming. Also\, we’ll provide support and guidance for issues such as maintaining motivation\, what to do when you’re sure your words are garbage\, etc. \nWe need a few experienced authors as well—those who would like to help “pass the torch” to the next generation of writers. Initially\, we will meet monthly. The first meeting will be Wednesday\, October 13\, 2021\, 7:30-9:00 p.m. on Zoom. \nHave questions or want to sign up? Email Kass Lamb at mentoring@writersalliance.org with WAG Mentor Group in the subject line. \nThis group is limited to WAG members. If you are not a WAG member and wish to join\, go to https://writersalliance.org/membership/.

SUMMARY:WAG. Where We’ve Been. Where We Could Go
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, September 12\, at 2:30 p.m. via Zoom for a conversation about the Writers Alliance of Gainesville (WAG) and what it offers its members and the community. The program will be moderated by Jess Elliott\, Skipper Hammond\, and Wendy Thornton. \nThornton\, an original founder of WAG and a past president\, will discuss WAG’s history and our community outreach. Next\, Elliott\, our current president\, will discuss WAG’s many member benefits\, which all members may not be aware of. Finally\, Hammond\, a former Critique Pod Coordinator\, will invite members to speak about what WAG means to them and what they want from WAG. \nHistory – Thornton will give a brief background on why and how WAG was formed\, how it has evolved\, and its community outreach by participation in\, or support of\, such programs as ArtSpeaks and 352Arts\, as well as through joint projects with other Gainesville organizations or institutions (e.g.\, Local Author Series with the public library\, Sunshine State Book Festival with Santa Fe College\, and the Matheson COVID book project with the Matheson History Museum). \nMember Benefits –  Elliott will discuss WAG’s many member benefits\, which include: a free copy of the Bacopa Literary Review\, published annually; membership in one or more critique pods in order to solicit feedback on one’s writing; bi-monthly receipt of the WAG Digest\, which includes writing tips\, contests\, etc.; use of a beta reader through our beta reader program; membership in WAG’s private Facebook group for interaction with other WAG members; participation in local book festivals when WAG erects its tent there; and discounts on WAG-sponsored events such as writing workshops. \nMembers may also take advantage of opportunities on WAG’s website. Their books can be listed there\, with a link to Amazon. If a member offers a service such as editing\, design\, etc.\, his or her service and contact information can be listed on the services page. We also invite members to submit blog posts for the website blog and to apply to serve on the speakers’ bureau. \nWhat Does WAG Mean to You and What Do You Want From It? –  Hammond will lead this important discussion. She will invite old-timers to share why they joined WAG\, what they have gotten out of it\, and what skills they might share with other members. She will also invite new members to speak up and answer questions like these: Why did you join WAG? What do you want from WAG? What are your goals? What has WAG done before that you’d like to see again? Are you willing to volunteer to make an event happen? How can we make things better in the future? What would you like to see? \nWe encourage all members to get involved and not just watch from the bleachers. Events don’t run themselves. WAG is an all-volunteer force and can use small and large help. Let’s get involved! Attend meetings and events! Meet other members! We all learn from one another. \nJOIN VIA ZOOM\nLink to Join this Zoom Meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89973131287?pwd=UWc4WXRaaDl0OWVQWmgwbTBiNHdVQT09\nMeeting ID: 899 7313 1287\nPassword: 316819

SUMMARY:Author Elizabeth Randall: Creating In-Depth Storylines and Plots for Fiction and Nonfiction
DESCRIPTION:Writers think up many ideas for books and stories and articles; sometimes these ideas just seem to come to us. That is the easy part. The hard part is to work the idea\, to provide it with context and a strong narrative. An awareness of the intuitive and the acquired elements of the craft enables writers to bring depth to their work. \nThis presentation focuses on writing habits\, structure\, pacing\, figurative language\, and writing with emotion and humor. \nRandall is an award-winning book author and a widely published freelance writer. She is a retired English teacher with a Master’s Degree in English Education. \nCheck out her author page on Amazon where her many books are listed: Murder in St. Augustine: The Mysterious Death of Athalia Ponsell Lindsey; Haunted St. Augustine and St. Johns County; Women in White: the Haunting of Northeast Florida; An Ocklawaha River Odyssey\, and The Floating Teacher [out of print]. \nLink to Join this Zoom Meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89973131287?pwd=UWc4WXRaaDl0OWVQWmgwbTBiNHdVQT09\nMeeting ID: 899 7313 1287\nPassword: 316819
