SUMMARY:Celebrate Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday\, April 2\, at the Millhopper branch of the Alachua County Library as we celebrate National Poetry Month with two of Gainesville’s most talented local poets and authors\, Jenna Nishida and Reinfred Addo. \nNishida will discuss “Found Poetry” — from poet’s helper to high art. Whether as an end unto itself or as an exercise in creative thinking\, found poetry can be enriching\, enlivening\, and freeing for poets—especially poets who might be feeling depleted or blocked. Learn about a variety of forms of found poetry\, as well as tips and methods for how to write (and cite) and perform found poems. \nNishida\, who served as Fiction Editor of WAG’s 2021 Bacopa Literary Review\, is one of the co-hosts of Gainesville’s Thursday Night Poetry Jam at the Civic Media Center. An educator by vocation\, she earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in literature at the University of Florida. She also has an educational specialist degree in the teaching of secondary English and has taught language arts to children\, teens\, and adult learners. She has made a lifelong study of poetry from multiple cultures and has explored contemporary poetry through events such as the Dodge Poetry Festival. \nReinfred Addo will explain how to do a poetry book launch. \n \nAddo is a Ghanaian-American writer\, and author of the poetry collections Washed Over (finalist for Eyelands Book Awards) and The Dedicadas (recipient of the Royal Palm Literary Awards). His works\, including his health humanities creative writing\, have been published by various organizations such as Tampered Press and in publications such as Signs of Life: An Anthology. \nHe has headlined a series of programs centering on poetry and prose. Performances at many local venues in Gainesville have included works published in Washed Over (such as a crowd-favorite poem “Life’s Students”) as well as unpublished works. \nAddo currently lives in Gainesville and enjoys the area’s arts initiatives\, including Bacopa Literary Review (he’s the poetry co-editor)\, Thursday Night Poetry Jam (host)\, DOPEnmic\, and ARTSPEAKS. \nA book signing will follow the program. \n

DESCRIPTION:The fourth annual Sunshine State Book Festival will begin with a meet-and-greet on Friday\, January 27\, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. This will be followed by an all-day event on Saturday\, January 28\, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. All activities will take place on the campus of the Trinity United Methodist Church\, 4000 NW 53rd Avenue\, Gainesville\, Florida. The event is free and open to the public\, and there is plenty of free parking. \nOne hundred and fifty authors will be on hand to meet readers\, answer questions\, and sign books. There will also be speakers throughout the day Saturday. Come spend a few hours or the entire day at the festival. Food trucks will be on site. \nIf you would like to volunteer at the festival\, go to the Sunshine State Book Festival website and sign up.

DESCRIPTION:Come to the Millhopper library on November 13 at 2:30 p.m.\, and hear readings from the 2022 Bacopa Literary Review\, the international journal published annually by the Writers Alliance of Gainesville. \nPARKING: If the library lot is full\, you may park in the Florida Credit Union lot at the traffic light immediately south of the library. \n\nLocal authors whose work is featured in the journal will read from their works. Bacopa editors will read prizewinning works in Fiction\, Creative Nonfiction\, Humor\, Formal Poetry\, and Free Verse Poetry. There will also be a presentation of the newest genre in our journal\, the hybrid visual/verbal art form known as Visual Poetry. \nThe Bacopa editorial committee accepted submissions from April 25 through May 30\, 2022. There was no submission fee. From the hundreds of submissions received\, the editors selected the best of the best. DESCRIPTION:Many of the ghost stories that thrilled Victorian and Edwardian audiences were lost and forgotten. But the classic ghost-story tradition has recently enjoyed a resurgence\, thanks to dedicated anthologists and publishing houses. Hundreds have been republished. \nSupernatural tales are often dismissed as pulp fiction–not considered literature. But did you know that Harriet Beecher Stowe\, Charles Dickens\, Arthur Conan Doyle\, Edith Wharton\, Henry James\, Rudyard Kipling\, Frances Hodgson Burnett\, Virginia Woolf\, and Agatha Christie penned ghost stories? Or that Thomas Hardy penned a zombie poem? Did you know that Freud wrote a thesis on the uncanny? \nWhat exactly does uncanny mean\, anyway? It’s deep and fascinating! Far beyond a tingle or a jump scare\, there are psychological\, historical\, and sociological layers to a solid ghost story. \nCome to the Millhopper branch of the Alachua County Library on October 9 (just before Halloween!) for a talk by ghost-story author J. DESCRIPTION:Join playwright Shamrock McShane and multi-talented artist Tom Miller on July 10 to learn how to turn a play into a movie. The program begins at 2:30 p.m. at the Millhopper branch library\, 3145 NW 43rd Street\, Gainesville\, Florida. \nMcShane is the author of Seven Sides of Shakespeare\, a play that became a movie at the hands of screenwriter Miller. Their talk will include a discussion of: \n\n     – the inspiration for the play\,\n     – the software used to create the movie\,\n     – type of equipment used\,\n     – filming of the movie\, and\n     – how they entered and did so well in screenwriting contests.\n\nMcShane\, who stars in the film\, is a Shakespearean-trained actor whose credits include the award for Best Supporting Actor at the 2016 Atlanta Black Theatre Festival. \nWith 30 years of service as a public school teacher and a passion for the arts\, McShane is also the author of Hall of Fools\, a revealing look at education in the U.S.; and his narration of Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is available as an audiobook. SUMMARY:Creating an Author Portrait that Increases Book Engagement
DESCRIPTION:It would be nice if a book description alone influenced people to take a book home. The truth is\, humans are very visual beings\, and although one may not even realize it\, a lot of decision-making on selecting a book\, or deciding to purchase it\, comes from the book’s cover design and author portrait. \nOn Sunday\, May 15\, at 2:30 p.m. Adrienne Fletcher\, owner and head photographer of Adrienne Fletcher Photography\, will discuss (1) why planning an author headshot with intention is important\, and (2) the top things to consider when doing so. These include aspects such as book topic\, author persona\, ideal reader\, image background\, what to wear\, and body language. Adrienne will do a deep dive into exactly what to consider for each step of the process so that creating a headshot that adds value to a book cover feels less stressful\, less uncomfortable\, and more intentional. \nWith a BFA in photography from Savannah College of Art and Design and a Master’s Degree in PR from the University of Florida\, Fletcher has spent over 15 years mastering the art and practice of photography\, and over 10 years working with individuals and teams on marketing\, branding and strategic planning. DESCRIPTION:Bringing Readers and Writers Together\nThe third annual Sunshine State Book Festival will be held in Gainesville\, Florida\, on Saturday and Sunday\, April 9 and 10. \nOaks Mall\nSaturday’s festival begins at 11:00 a.m. and goes until 5:00 p.m. in the spacious Oaks Mall on Newberry Road near I-75. Admission is free. Since the festival is completely indoors\, it will be held rain or shine. \nAttendees will have an opportunity to meet and engage with authors\, purchase books\, and have them signed. \nBring the kids or grandkids. They will enjoy the children’s area with storytellers and activities. There will also be hourly drawings for free books. \nThe Matheson History Museum\nSunday’s program will take place at the Matheson History Museum\, 513 E. SUMMARY:Jack E. Davis to Speak at Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park
DESCRIPTION:Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jack E. Davis brings his brand-new book\, The Bald Eagle: The Improbable Journey of America’s Bird\, to Marjorie Rawlings’ famous citrus grove at the edge of Orange Lake. A book the New York Times calls “rollicking\, poetic and wise.”  The talk will be followed by a book signing and discussion by the author\, music\, and light refreshments. Free with standard park admission. \nJack Davis grew up along the Gulf of Mexico\, which figures prominently in his work. He is the author of eight books including An Everglade Providence: Marjorie Stoneman Douglas and the American Environmental Century\, and most recently\, The Gulf: The Making of an American Sea. The Gulf was hailed as a “non-fiction epic” and won the Pulitzer Prize for history in 2018. The Bald Eagle is again history in Jack Davis’ distinctive style—a broad panorama sweeping through five centuries\, from Native Americans living peacefully with the great bird to the venerated symbol of an ambitious new nation and finally the miraculous escape from near extinction in the 20th century—twice! Scott Weidensaul (A World on the Wing) calls The Bald Eagle “a magnificent tribute…bridging patriotism\, Native Spirituality\, environmental carnage and\, against all odds\, ecological redemption.” \nJack E. Davis is the Rothman Family Chair in the Humanities at the University of Florida. He divides his time between Florida and New Hampshire. \n

Move clocks ahead one hour.\n\n\nOn Sunday\, March 13\, at 2:30 p.m.\, Susie Baxter will share tips she has learned from independently publishing four books in various formats\, from paperback and ebook to hardcover and audible. \nThe main focus of her talk will be on book design using Microsoft Word\, InDesign\, Bookow\, and Vellum software for formatting. But she will also discuss: \n\nFree resources that can help us improve our writing and the final manuscript (critique pods\, Aztekera\, Hemingway\, Grammarly\, and beta readers)\nAdvantages and disadvantages of working with a local printer versus a book publisher\nDifferences between vanity publishers\, hybrid presses\, traditional publishing\, and print-on-demand (POD)\nCosts and tasks associated with independent publishing\, such as the purchase of ISBNs and applying for a Library of Congress Control Number\nHiring editors and proofreaders\nWorking with a narrator on an audible book\n\nA fifth-generation Floridian\, Baxter grew up on a farm in north Florida. In adulthood\, she attended Louisiana State University in New Orleans and the University of South Alabama in Mobile where she earned a BFA. After working for a few years as a graphic artist\, she landed a job with a health-science publishing house in St. Louis. There\, she advanced from editorial assistant to acquisitions editor and finally to the publisher of primary care. During her career\, she commissioned dozens of successful clinical reference books authored by world-renowned physicians. \nShe has now written four books of her own: C.G. & Ethel: A Family History (2008); Write Your Memoir: One Story at a Time (2017)\, a nonfiction how-to book; Pumping Sunshine: A Memoir of My Rural Childhood (2018)\, which won that year’s Royal Palm Literary Award for Memoir and was named 1st runner-up for the Published Book of the Year; and her latest\, I\, Susanette… (2022)\, a coming-of-age memoir. \nBaxter believes that everyone has a story to tell\, and she drives that point home in the memoir-writing course she teaches annually at Santa Fe College in Gainesville.
