SUMMARY:Civil Rights Era to the Present
DESCRIPTION:The fourth program in The Other Book series\, Civil Rights Era to the Present\, will be held on April 12\, 2025\, from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Each program in this series has been held at a different location\, and this one will be at The Cotton Club\, 837 SE 7th Avenue\, Gainesville\, FL 32601. \nSponsored by the Alachua County Community Remembrance Project (ACCRP)\, the series was developed to help fill some of the gap left in Florida’s public education. This educational opportunity is especially valuable for those writing about history\, inequity\, and/or cross-cultural relationships within our country. \nSeveral WAG members have said they benefited from one or more of the first three programs: \n\nDispelling the Myths: Pre-Colonial Africa\, held in January at the Harn Art Museum\nEnslavement in Alachua County\, held in February at the Haile Homestead\nJim Crow in Alachua County\, held in March at the Alachua County Administration Building\n\n\n\nRegistering for the April program is suggested but is not required. All are invited to attend. The courses are offered free\, but donations are appreciated.

SUMMARY:Enneagrams for Writers and Other Creatives
DESCRIPTION:Guest speaker Dina Smith\, a licensed mental health professional\, will describe how the Enneagram can benefit writers and other creatives. She believes clarity can be empowering—and the Enneagram is the GPS that gets you there. She says the Enneagram can be a powerful tool for writers in several ways\, helping them develop richer characters\, deeper themes\, and more authentic storytelling. \nIn this presentation\, you will learn the Core Motivations of the 9 Enneagram basic types\, as well as the process\, goal\, and obstacle for each Enneagram type as a writer. You might know where you are and where you want to go\, but that doesn’t mean you won’t encounter roadblocks\, detours\, or even a need to reroute.  We will also take a brief look at how each Enneagram type has paths for utilizing strengths and overcoming weaknesses as a writer. Just like a GPS maps out the most direct route to your destination\, the Enneagram shows you the path to becoming your highest\, truest self. \nIf you wish to test your Enneagram in advance of Smith’s talk\, here’s a link she supplied: https://www.truity.com/test/enneagram-personality-test. It’s free. \nSmith is a Masters Certified Addictions Professional and an Enneagram Informed Mental Health Professional. She has worked in community mental health and hospital-based settings\, with a focus on addiction medicine for the past 18 years. Currently\, she serves as the Director of Clinical Services at the UF Health Florida Recovery Center. She is consistently recognized for promoting understanding through using the Enneagram to enhance the personal and professional growth for individuals and teams. In her free time\, Dina enjoys being part of a team that leads worship at her church and spending time with her husband and two small children. \nHer profiles and social media contact information: \nhttps://www.psychologytoday.com/profile/1342124 \nDina Smith\, LMHC | LinkedIn \nDina Smith **Evening Availability** – My Enneagram Coach

SUMMARY:Blogging 101 - by Andy Adkins
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, March 3\, 2024\, at 2:30 p.m.\, author and active blogger Andy Adkins will give a talk at the Millhopper Branch of the Alachua County Library entitled “Blogging 101.” \nA glance at his blog\, A Veteran’s Journey\, reveals that he has been an active blogger since 2019. He writes personal stories about his time in the Navy\, both in Guam and aboard USS Kitty Hawk; his father’s and his father-in-law’s experiences in WWII’s European Theater of Operations; his experiences as a Gainesville firefighter\, and his time as an engineer. \n“Every now and then\,” Adkins says\, “I sprinkle in some life-changing tidbit.” He has certainly had quite a life–now in his fifth or sixth career and not slowing down. \nBesides being a U.S\, Navy veteran\, he is a former City of Gainesville firefighter\, an electronics engineer\, a retired legal technologist\, and an author. He’s written and published several books about the military. His first novel\, Never Forget: A Veteran’s Journey for Redemption & Forgiveness\, debuted in 2021. He is currently in the process of completing a high-tech thriller\, Until We Meet Again.\n \nHe and his wife live in Gainesville. \nFor more information\, visit Andy Adkins’ website: www.azadkinsiii.com. \nAndy\, we thank you for your service. \n

SUMMARY:Celebrate Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday\, April 2\, at the Millhopper branch of the Alachua County Library as we celebrate National Poetry Month with two of Gainesville’s most talented local poets and authors\, Jenna Nishida and Reinfred Addo. \nNishida will discuss “Found Poetry” — from poet’s helper to high art. Whether as an end unto itself or as an exercise in creative thinking\, found poetry can be enriching\, enlivening\, and freeing for poets—especially poets who might be feeling depleted or blocked. Learn about a variety of forms of found poetry\, as well as tips and methods for how to write (and cite) and perform found poems. \nNishida\, who served as Fiction Editor of WAG’s 2021 Bacopa Literary Review\, is one of the co-hosts of Gainesville’s Thursday Night Poetry Jam at the Civic Media Center. An educator by vocation\, she earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in literature at the University of Florida. She also has an educational specialist degree in the teaching of secondary English and has taught language arts to children\, teens\, and adult learners. She has made a lifelong study of poetry from multiple cultures and has explored contemporary poetry through events such as the Dodge Poetry Festival. \nReinfred Addo will explain how to do a poetry book launch. \n \nAddo is a Ghanaian-American writer\, and author of the poetry collections Washed Over (finalist for Eyelands Book Awards) and The Dedicadas (recipient of the Royal Palm Literary Awards). His works\, including his health humanities creative writing\, have been published by various organizations such as Tampered Press and in publications such as Signs of Life: An Anthology. \nHe has headlined a series of programs centering on poetry and prose. Performances at many local venues in Gainesville have included works published in Washed Over (such as a crowd-favorite poem “Life’s Students”) as well as unpublished works. \nAddo currently lives in Gainesville and enjoys the area’s arts initiatives\, including Bacopa Literary Review (he’s the poetry co-editor)\, Thursday Night Poetry Jam (host)\, DOPEnmic\, and ARTSPEAKS. \nA book signing will follow the program. \n
