DESCRIPTION:Nathan Crabbe\, the opinion and engagement editor for the Gainesville Sun will speak at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday\, March 14\, via Zoom. \nSubmitting a letter to the editor or an opinion essay to the Gainesville Sun is one avenue for us writers to use our craft to participate in civic discourse. Nathan Crabbe will give us an inside look at the submission process—what works and what doesn’t—and share his thoughts on the state of print newspapers. He’ll discuss what the “opinion and engagement editor” actually does\, the number of submissions the Sun typically receives\, how he selects what to print\, and how he deals with complaints about his editorial decisions\, among other issues. Crabbe will offer a short presentation in order to allow plenty of time for Q&A. SUMMARY:Writing Screenplays - A Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:When you walk out of a movie theater—remember doing that?—do you ever wish you could write a script? Well\, you can. On Sunday\, February 7\, at 2:30 p.m.\, Wendy Thornton will lead a panel discussion about screenwriting with Gary Gordon\, Shamrock McShane\, and Tom Miller. The program will be held via Zoom (see link at the end of this article.) \nThe four panelists will discuss the basics that answer questions like these: How do you get started? What are the formats that you must follow? How do you structure a movie plot? \nThey will touch on the beginning\, middle\, end\, plot points\, character creation\, character arc\, genre\, and the seeming conflict between creating a tight outline\, yet keeping it loose enough for creative ideas along the way. They will also discuss the use of screenplay software and how to enter various contests. \nWriting scripts is an enjoyable variation of the classic act of writing. Before you know it\, you’ll be envisioning your characters on the silver screen. \nWendy Thornton will begin the discussion. She is working on a screenplay and is the author of several books including Sounding the Depths\, Dear Oprah Or How I Beat Cancer and Learned to Love Daytime TV\, and a  mystery\, Bear-Trapped: In a Trashy Hollywood Novel. Her stories and essays have been published in a variety of journals and books including Riverteeth\, Epiphany\, and MacGuffin. She was nominated for a Pushcart Prize\, has been Editor’s Pick on Salon.com multiple times\, and has received numerous awards. Her works have been published in England\, Ireland\, Scotland\, Australia\, and India. And somehow\, Thornton still finds time to teach writing at Santa Fe College in Gainesville\, Florida. \nGary Gordon is an author\, songwriter\, screenwriter\, travel writer\, comedy writer\, and playwright\, who says he probably spends “too much time on Facebook.” He spent over twenty years in Los Angeles\, California\, learning the craft of screenwriting and working on several works-for-hire. After returning to Gainesville he participated\, before COVID\, in the WAG Screenwriting pod and taught screenwriting at Santa Fe College. \nShamrock McShane\, writer\, teacher\, and actor\, is a 1986 graduate of the University of Florida’s Creative Writing Program. He is the author of the novel Rock Beauty and the nonfiction novel Hall of Fools. As a screenwriter\, he collaborated with his son\, director Mike McShane\, on films including The Votive Pit\, You Are Not Frank Sinatra\, and It’s All Good. A Shakespearean-trained actor as well as a prize-wining playwright\, his acting credits include playing Mercutio\, Macbeth\, and Prospero\, as well as Willy Loman in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. \nTom Miller is a playwright\, screenwriter\, performance artist\, musician\, director\, sound designer\, and actor. He hosts an avant-garde variety show\, The Tom Miller Show\, a staple of entertainment in Gainesville\, Florida\, since 1984. In its current form\, the show is known as the Reverend Angeldust’s Tabernacle of Hedonism. Miller says it is the “longest-running variety show in the United States.” Miller holds a BA in Theatre from the University of Florida and an MFA in Screenwriting from the David Lynch MFA Screenwriter’s Program at Maharishi International University of Management in Fairfield\, Iowa. DESCRIPTION:If you missed this talk\, you can read a summary of the talk on Bob Dekle’s blog.\nOn Sunday\, January 10\, George R. (Bob) Dekle\, Sr.\, will discuss the process he uses for writing and researching nonfiction accounts of historic trials. The template for his talk will be a book in pre-publication with Kent State University Press: Old Shakespeare and the East River Ripper: A Gilded Age Mystery\, \nThe book tells the story of a Jack-the-Ripper style murder in a New York City brothel investigated by the “American Sherlock Holmes” and prosecuted by New York’s greatest Assistant District Attorney. The case was beset with issues of classism\, racism\, illegal immigration\, police corruption\, agenda-driven journalism\, and questions of false conviction. The author attempts to sort through the morass of conflicting claims to find the truth. \nDekle served for two years as an assistant public defender and thirty years as a prosecutor\, handling dozens of homicide cases.  \nHis last-published book\, Six Capsules: The Gilded Age Murder of Helen Potts\, was awarded a Gold Medal by the Florida Authors and Publishers Association and Silver Medals by the Independent Publishers Association Book Awards and Royal Palm Literary Awards of the Florida Writers Association\, all in nonfiction categories. \nDekle is the author of many other books including The Last Murder: The Investigation\, Prosecution\, and Execution of Ted Bundy and Prairie Defender: The Murder Trials of Abraham Lincoln (winner of a scholarship award from the Illinois Historical Society and Gold and Silver Medals from the Florida Authors and Publishers Association in nonfiction categories). DESCRIPTION:Ann Henry\, novelist and author of The Novel Pitch\, will speak at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday\, December 6\, via Zoom. \nSubmitting a compelling query letter to a literary agent\, editor\, or scout is the first step for most writers hoping to break into the traditional publishing market\, and the heart of that letter is the pitch. Ann Henry will give us the tools and information we need to write a professional and engaging pitch that can entice the gatekeepers of publishing houses to request to see examples of our work\, possibly resulting in a publishing contract. She will give us industry guidelines\, explain the elements that should be included in a pitch\, demonstrate different approaches we can take to present our stories to best advantage\, and share with us methods for reducing word count to the desired length. Henry’s presentation will take about half an hour\, after which she will be available for questions. \nA native of north Mississippi\, Ann earned a BA in Journalism from the University of Mississippi. After graduation\, she worked for years as a newspaper reporter and editor in South Florida and in the British West Indies and later as an English teacher\, magazine writer\, radio news reporter\, and television producer. Ann is the author of novels A Bit of Sun and Sailing Away from the Moon and the nonfiction book The Novel Pitch. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, November 8\, Susie Baxter will discuss the importance of leaving a legacy. She will share how she wrote about her own life experiences in her memoir\, Pumping Sunshine\, which won two 2018 Royal Palm Literary Awards: first place in memoir and second place overall. She is quick to credit her WAG pod mates who gave her feedback and encouragement during the writing process. She is also the author of C. G. & Ethel: A Family History\, and Write Your Memoir: One Story at a Time. Her presentation will feature tips and exercises from Write Your Memoir. \nBaxter says\, “I never expected to become a writer; I wanted to be an artist.” She majored in art and worked as a graphic designer before going with a medical publishing house in St. Louis. There\, she served as an editorial assistant\, developmental editor\, executive editor\, and finally publisher. As an executive editor\, she drafted proposals for clinical reference books and recruited top physicians to write them. But upon the loss of a beloved grandmother\, she came to recognize the importance of leaving a legacy and began writing about her own life. \nBaxter has been an active supporter of WAG since its founding in 2009\, serving in numerous positions including president and creative nonfiction editor for Bacopa. She has already interviewed and promoted several WAG members and is looking for more book authors to highlight. \nShe is the author of Insider’s Guide to Campground Hosting in Florida Parks\, a resource book about volunteer workamping on Florida’s public lands. According to workamper.com\, the word workamper was trademarked in 1987. It’s an individual who travels the country and works in a campground and lives in an RV. \nMacFadden travels the state of Florida in an old Class A RV with her mom and sometimes with her youngest daughter. They started visiting state parks\, just taking pictures and videos and writing reviews. But they enjoyed the experience so much that they decided to become volunteers at the state parks. In return\, they get to stay free for up to four months at campsites. \n“When researching the material for my book\,” MacFadden said\, “I found that there are opportunities and needs in all of Florida’s public lands and wildlife management areas. We have also volunteered in a couple of national parks\, forests\, county parks and national wildlife areas\, so I have enough material for a few more books. DESCRIPTION:Author\, nutritionist\, and fitness guru Caroline Anaya\, who writes an online newsletter\, “FitBits\,” is WAG’s March 1 speaker. In her newsletter\, now in its seventh year\, Anaya writes about food\, nutrition\, and her life. \nAt the March meeting\, she will expand on relevant sales lore\, such as “Sell yourself\, and your product will sell itself\,” refining it for writers who would rather spend their time writing than marketing. But the techniques can apply to anyone who wishes to gain a following with the use of the Internet (visual artists\, for example). \nAnaya’s professional years involved research in developing the original Minimum Daily Requirements with the USDA and an infant formula for use in Nigeria under UNICEF. She helped set up standards for fishery products for the USDI. She then turned to industry-based food technology\, developing Metrecal™\, the first diet food\, and many other products. She has published a dozen scientific papers and articles. \nHer autobiography\, The Bite of History: Patriarchy Messing with Me and Food for 85 Years\, has received excellent reviews. One reviewer wrote\, “The story of an intrepid woman sincerely sharing the whole spectrum of her life without shying away from the grueling\, even horrible encounters and tough choices. The nutritional information in the appendix is very enlightening. You’ll never look at the USDA nutritional pyramid the same way again.” \nAnaya stays healthy with light meals of natural foods\, deep sleep\, daily yoga\, and rides her tricycle down a wooded trail near her home.

DESCRIPTION:Note this author reading will be held in the children’s department Story Woods Room. \nElaine Robinson will read from her illustrated poetic story\, Uncommon Scents\, which tells the tale of Marvin\, a polite but bullied and lonely little muskrat\, who lives in a forest where all the other animals are smarter\, swifter\, and more talented than he is. At least that’s what Marvin thinks. But then Marvin meets a brand-new friend who helps him realize just how gifted a modest little muskrat really is. This illustrated story is a tribute to bullied little critters everywhere—those with four feet\, or six feet\, or even only two feet. \n \nElaine Beem Robinson \nAn author and illustrator\, Elaine was born in New Haven\, Connecticut\, and moved to Florida as a child. She holds a BS from the Florida Institute of Technology and a MS from the University of Florida. As a young person\, she was advised against pursuing a career in the arts and instead was directed into the unforgivingly complex world of physics\, biochemistry\, and molecular biology\, where flights of fancy are actively discouraged. Many years followed at the University of Florida working as a research microbiologist\, where she contributed to the plethora of articles written on the misdeeds of bacteria. Now retired\, she is free to write about and draw a world of her own invention\, a world of utter fiction\, generally told in the form of children’s poetry. Stanley Richardson\, Alachua County’s first Poet Laureate and an advocate for social justice\, will be WAG’s guest speaker on Sunday\, February 9\, at 2:30 p.m.\, at the Millhopper Library. \nRichardson is the author of Hip Hop Is Dead – Long Live Hip Hop: The Birth\, Death And Resurrection of Hip Hop Activism. This poetry collection “captures the visual eclectic voice and expression of the ‘everyday’ African American experience.” \nIn his presentation\, Richardson will discuss what inspired him to write the book\, the creative process\, and specific challenges he encountered. He will also read short excerpts from the book. \nRichardson has been writing poetry since he was a child and has hosted numerous spoken-word events for residents of north central Florida. He is the founder and director of ARTSPEAKS\, dedicated to promoting literacy\, bringing awareness\, expanding opportunity\, and providing a medium for expression through the art of poetry and the spoken word. \nThe next ARTSPEAKS event will be on Sunday\, March 8\, 2020\, 4:00–7:00 p.m. at the Historic Thomas Center\, 302 NE 6th Avenue in Gainesville. DESCRIPTION:In lieu of a January program at the Millhopper Library\, WAG members and guests are invited to attend author Jill Ciment’s talk about her latest book at the Alachua County Library Headquarters\, meeting room A\, from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. The library’s website states: \n \nUniversity of Florida English professor Jill Ciment has written seven novels\, a memoir\, and a collection of short stories. Her novel Heroic Measures was made into the film Five Flights Up starring Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton. She has received honors including a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship and a Guggenheim fellowship. \nCiment’s new book\, The Body in Question\, starts in a jury holding room as two jurors on a murder trial for a teenage girl who is charged with killing her toddler brother begin a torrid love affair while they are sequestered. The central character\, juror C-12\, a married female photographer\, comes to realize that her “one last dalliance before she gets too old” with juror F-17 will take on more serious consequences when the other jurors start to figure out what they’re up to. When one of the other jurors sends an anonymous letter revealing their affair\, that’s when things get really complicated.

Not everyone on her squad is happy she’s in charge\, she’s still dealing with the break up of her marriage\, and wealthy residents are up in arms over the murder of a young professor in broad daylight in Ravine Creek\, a proposed city park where she jogs every day. Cory is convinced that what appears to be a random robbery gone wrong is premeditated murder. Her job is complicated by the appearance of Fletcher Manning\, a bestselling novelist who shadows her as research for a female detective novel he is writing. A skilled cook and culinary historian\, Bertelsen is also the author of Mushroom: A Global History. \nCindy Bertelsen \nTrained as an historian\, librarian\, and nutritionist\, Cynthia D. Bertelsen is the author of Mushroom: A Global History (Reaktion Books U.K.\, 2013) and A Hastiness of Cooks: A Practical Handbook for Use in Deciphering the Mysteries of Historic Recipes and Cookbooks (Turquoise Moon Press\, 2019). She has also published essays\, articles\, book reviews\, and photographs in numerous print and online publications. Volunteering with the Peacock-Harper Culinary History Group at Virginia Tech for over ten years provided her with a deep knowledge of historic cookbooks. And her cooking skills blossomed through years of living and working in various countries\, specifically Mexico\, Paraguay\, Honduras\, Haiti\, Morocco\, and Burkina Faso. Cynthia also attended cooking classes in Paris\, France\, at Le Cordon Bleu École de Cuisine et de Pâtisserie. DESCRIPTION:Note: Held in Meeting Room B of the Alachua Library Headquarters Branch \nGail Rose Thompson will present her nonfiction Iran from Crown to Turban\, relating tales of life in Iran during the time of the Pahlavi Crown\, the revolution and post-revolutionary times. Her images of the country are far different from what the press tells us. She lived there in the 1970s\, visited two years ago\, and is frequently in contact with friends living there now. Her entertaining stories depict a country of which we are misinformed. \nGail Rose Thompson \nGail grew up in Ontario\, Canada\, where as a young girl she became involved in riding and training horses. She graduated from Hamilton Teachers College and taught school for several years before she traveled to Iran\, where she worked for the Imperial Court of Shah Mohamed Reza Pahlavi during the “Golden Years” of the 1970s. While there\, she witnessed the country’s development as the leading power in the Middle East. Upon her arrival in Richmond\, Virginia from Iran\, she opened a riding school which\, over the next forty years\, developed into a renowned training facility for Hunter/Jumper horses and riders. She returned to Iran in the fall of 2017\, where she met up with old friends and spent time touring and learning about the life in the Islamic Republic of Iran as it is now. She currently lives in Ocala\, Florida. Her memoir All the Shah’s Horses has been well received. \nIran From Crown To Turbans  \nPeople are curious about how life in Iran today\, under the Islamic republic\, differs from life as it was during the reign of Shah Mohamad Reza Pahlavi. Gail Rose Thompson\, who lived there in the 1970s and worked for the imperial court as the Shah’s horse trainer\, has many tales about life during that time and also about the way of life in the country post-revolution. She visited Iran in 2017 after an absence of forty years\, the first ex-employee of the Shah to return. She paints a picture of a beautiful historic country that dates from the fourth millennium BCE\, when the Persian Empire was the most powerful kingdom in the ancient world. Iranians are proud of their heritage and are polite\, hospitable\, and extremely family-oriented. Iran from Crown to Turbans is a fascinating book of stories that will enlighten the reader about a country that has been misrepresented.

DESCRIPTION:Four authors with recently published e-books will discuss the approaches\, research\, and writing techniques used to successfully prepare and conserve their own stories and those of their families.\nMost of us share a strong core value regarding the importance of better understanding our roots and family histories. Those who come after us will want to know about us. Times are changing more rapidly than ever\, and unless we capture and share the stories that relate the history and lifestyles of our generation and those before us\, they will be lost forever. \nThe four authors—Nick West\, Ginny Brinkley\, Faith Connors\, and Tracy Connors—invite you to join them for a panel discussion and informal “workshop” colloquy to explore the how-to’s and why’s of legacy e-publishing. The authors will talk for about fifteen minutes each about their personal e-publishing experiences. Then\, the four will assemble as a panel to answer\, individually or collectively\, any questions posed. Feel free to submit your questions in advance to the WAG Program Coordinator\, Kimberley Mullins. The panel will also welcome questions from attendees on any aspect of legacy publishing and/or e-publication. \nFaith R. Connors\, a retired Associate Professor\, University of Maryland (UM)\, directed and managed community service clubs and educational youth programs for UM’s Cooperative Extension Service. She attended the University of Oslo’s International Summer School\, and completed other graduate level studies at Bowie State University\, the University of Maryland\, and Hood College. Her work has been published in British Business Today\, All Hands Magazine (U.S. Navy’s flagship publication)\, and the Longman Dictionary of Mass Media and Communication. She is the author of three books\, Love Midgie\, Flavors of the Fjords\, and Clark’s Hill Cat. \nGinny Brinkley has been writing almost her entire life. As a young girl growing up in Virginia\, she composed stories about her dog and cat\, illustrating them with photos from her Brownie Hawkeye camera. Her sci-fi novel\, EarthQuest\, was begun by her “mad scientist” uncle\, and completed by Brinkley and a fellow writing group member after her uncle became incapacitated. Her most recent book is Goddess: A Child of the Sixties\, which looks back on her life and the excitement of her first love against a backdrop of the Vietnam War and the iconic music of the 1960s. \nNick West\, a Gainesville native\, attended Gainesville High School and the University of Florida. He is a veteran of the United States Navy and\, together with his family\, has owned and operated a landscape business in the area for over forty years. He began his writing career in 2010 when his first novel\, The Great Southern Circus\, was published. His other print books include The Long Road Home\, The Sandspur Special\, and To Light A New Fire. He recently published an e-book of historic fiction\, The Great Southern Circus: From the Big Top to Gettysburg\, which incorporates\, expands\, and updates The Great Southern Circus and its sequel\, The Long Road Home.\n \nCaptain Tracy D. Connors\, USN (Retired)\, graduated from the University of Florida (BA) and the University of Rhode Island (MA)\, followed by graduate study in public communications at the University of Maryland and human resource development at Bowie State University. In 2013\, he was awarded a Ph.D. with distinction in Human Services at Capella University. Connors has published two major military history works: Baited Trap\, the Ambush of Mission 1890 and Truckbusters from Dogpatch\, the Combat Diary of the 18th Fighter-Bomber Wing in the Korean War. He served as editor of Leading at the Strategic Level\, published by the National Defense University. He published the first volunteer resource management handbook in 1995 and has published eight major handbooks for nonprofit organization management. \n

Steele will discuss his book\, The Gypsy Family Circus of 1933: Stories from a Long-Gone Era on Saturday\, June 1\, at 2:30 p.m. in the Foundation Room of the Alachua County Library Headquarters in downtown Gainesville. \nWeaving together a vast and varied tapestry of people\, places\, animals\, and events selected from stories heard in childhood\, the author will rely on his “Gypsy story-telling gene” to bring back to life a different world\, a world of his Gypsy family\, their circus life\, and the struggle they and all Americans faced in the Great Depression. \nHis presentation will illustrate interactively some themes of the book\, explain cultural and ethnic perceptions\, and respond to questions and interests of those attending. It will be a sort of “coming-out” event\, in that it has never really been beneficial to admit being Gypsy. The usual result has been either prejudice or peculiar questions and comments. But maybe it’s time. \nCare to have your fortune told or learn how to spin cotton candy the fast and easy way? How about some insider tips on riding jumping horses under the big top\, or maybe handling a spooked elephant in a parade? Even free pony rides for all with a fertile enough imagination. We’ll see what old family secrets are of greatest interest. \nSteele uses historical fiction to recreate the life his older relatives lived during the Great Depression. He feels fortunate to have a Gypsy heritage\, to have grown up on circuses (when not in boarding school)\, and to have the chance to interpret that life to a wider world.

SUMMARY:The Courage to Tell Your Story
DESCRIPTION:Our appreciation to Kimberley Mullins for writing this summary of Kandra Albury’s talk.\nKandra Albury\, president and founder of Kids ‘n Capes\,* said to Writers Alliance members and guests\, “You must have the courage to tell your story\,” emphasizing how sharing one’s story empowers others. \nShe grew up in a single-parent household\, one of five children. Her mother’s goal for them all was to graduate from high school and go to college or into the military. \nShe chose college and\, after graduating\, started her career in journalism. However\, that wasn’t her love. She asked herself\, “Why write other people’s stories\, when I can write my own?“ Hence her first book\, From Food Stamps to Favor\, a memoir of her journey as a child in a single-parent home and a victim of sexual abuse. \nAfter the publication of her memoir\, she turned her attention to marketing the book. With a background in journalism\, she reached out to many channels. She went out on a limb\, proposing her book to the Christian Broadcast Network (CBN) because she felt the book would inspire others in the church setting\, mainly because it is a place where victims and predators co-exist. Unfortunately\, CBN was not interested. But a month or so later\, they called her and asked for an interview. \nNext\, Albury ventured into writing children’s books to make youngsters aware of sexual predators. First in The Feisty Four Children’s Book Series is Don’t You Dare Touch Me There. This book makes kids aware of predators and how to get the courage to fight back. At her presentations in schools\, she gives each child a cape for the new superpower\, Courage. The other two books in the series\, Leave Us Alone You Mean ‘Ole Bully!! and No! address bullying and drugs. The later book was dear to her heart\, she said\, since her older sister became addicted to drugs. \nPassionate about writing\, Albury teaches a class at Santa Fe College\, “Let’s Write Your Book Now.” And during her talk\, she highlighted ten important tips for writing: \n\n\n\nSchedule time to write. Don’t just make time.\nSet a deadline.\nHave an accountability partner.\nEnjoy the process and all that comes with it.\nList all of your chapter titles or at least seven\, so if you have writer’s block later\, you can move on to another chapter.\nWrite about what makes you\, you — your passion.\nTell your story unapologetically.\nInclude humor\, pain\, fear\, and shame.\nInvest in your project: you must be the first investor.\nDon’t forget marketing: Business cards/Flyers/Promo cards/Social Media – It’s up to you to get your name out there.\n\n\n\nAlbury serves as Training Facilitator for Darkness to Light\, a non-profit organization committed to empowering adults to prevent child sexual abuse.
