SUMMARY:Hugh Suggs to Speak
DESCRIPTION:“Pssst\, want to know a secret?” asks Hugh Suggs. “There’s no bottom you can’t come back from if you are determined to get back up\, are willing to ask for help\, and accept it when it’s offered. \nSuggs will be our speaker on Sunday\, January 9\, at 2:30 p.m.\, in Meeting Room A on the upper level of the downtown library. His poignant story\, “From one Field to Another\,“ won first place for creative nonfiction in the 2019 Bacopa Literary Review. He has now written a powerful memoir dedicated to his illiterate farming father’s struggle\, inside the abject poverty of itinerate farm work\, to raise six children—children who’d go on to become teachers\, county managers\, decorated soldiers\, and successful politicians. \nWritten in novel style in a series of forty vignettes\, the reader walks into Wise’s Drugs with Suggs’s father in 1945 as the storyteller journeys back to his sharecropping roots in order to discover how he became the person who ended up beneath the wheels of a loaded log truck. While he lost his legs in that accident\, he gained an enhanced perspective in his writing. \nHis talk will center around how he combines his open-mic-honed prose poetry with the challenge of writing about a seventy-year journey from his changing perspective; first as that of a gifted child laborer who becomes a budding poet and then as a baggage-carrying\, struggling adult whose bad choices left him beneath those wheels. \nHe will be highlighting this technique by reading excerpts from both his finished manuscript of creative nonfiction\, “Rind and All\,” and performing pieces from a collection of poetry he’s calling “Back on this Side / A Second Chance at Enlightenment\,” whose lines kept finding their way into his memoir’s manuscript. \nThere is free parking around the downtown library and side streets. While the meeting room on the upper level is spacious\, we encourage attendees to wear masks and to socially distance. If the meeting has to change\, we will update this site immediately\, so check back before you go. \nMeeting Room A on Sunday\, January 9\, 2:30 PM – 4:45 PM \n401 East University Ave.\, Gainesville\, FL 32601

SUMMARY:Writer’s Talks at Rawlings House Series Returns to Cross Creek
DESCRIPTION:The Writer’s Talks at Rawlings House Series returns to Cross Creek; under a magnolia tree almost in the shadow of the Pulitzer Prize winner’s home. \nAnn McCutchan brings us her critically acclaimed\, often revealing\, sometimes deeply moving biography of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings herself—The Life She Wished to Live. \n“Come to this biography for the outsized personality\,” Dwight Garner writes in the New York Times. “Stay for a portrait of a woman whose writing meant everything to her.” \nLight refreshments and music begin at 1:30 p.m.; Writer’s Talk at 2:00 p.m. Free with standard park admission. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park at Cross Creek\, Florida. Call 352-466-3672 for more details. \nMade possible by the Friends of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Farm\, the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Society\, and Florida State Parks Department. \nWhat emerges after seven years is the most complete portrait of a very complex life: the long sojourn in Florida’s backcountry and her instinctive affinity for the place and its people; astonishing encounters\, and endearing friendships with the literary galaxy including Ernest Hemingway\, F. Scott Fitzgerald\, Thomas Wolfe\, Robert Frost\, Margaret Mitchell\, and her “magnificent editor\,” Maxwell Perkins; the relationships which helped shape her— from her hugely ambitious mother Ida to her insecure but surprisingly courageous husband Charles Rawlings\, and finally Zora Neale Hurston\, who would bring her to a new understanding of African Americans. Above all\, there is the furiously driven writer. “Rawlings cleared through life as though armed with a machete\,” Jonathan Miles writes in Garden and Gun. “McCutchan gracefully records every chop.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnn McCutchan is the author of five previous books\, most recently Where’s the Moon? A Memoir of the Space Coast and the Florida Dream. She is also a professional musician\, lyricist\, and librettist. Ms. McCutchan lives in Laramie\, Wyoming.

SUMMARY:Author Elizabeth Randall: Creating In-Depth Storylines and Plots for Fiction and Nonfiction
DESCRIPTION:Writers think up many ideas for books and stories and articles; sometimes these ideas just seem to come to us. That is the easy part. The hard part is to work the idea\, to provide it with context and a strong narrative. An awareness of the intuitive and the acquired elements of the craft enables writers to bring depth to their work. \nThis presentation focuses on writing habits\, structure\, pacing\, figurative language\, and writing with emotion and humor. \nRandall is an award-winning book author and a widely published freelance writer. She is a retired English teacher with a Master’s Degree in English Education. \nCheck out her author page on Amazon where her many books are listed: Murder in St. Augustine: The Mysterious Death of Athalia Ponsell Lindsey; Haunted St. Augustine and St. Johns County; Women in White: the Haunting of Northeast Florida; An Ocklawaha River Odyssey\, and The Floating Teacher [out of print]. \nLink to Join this Zoom Meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89973131287?pwd=UWc4WXRaaDl0OWVQWmgwbTBiNHdVQT09\nMeeting ID: 899 7313 1287\nPassword: 316819

SUMMARY:David Eugene Perry: Create Dialogue Fearlessly
DESCRIPTION:David Eugene Perry\, WAG’s guest speaker on May 2\, will discuss the importance of dialog in telling stories. The program will be via Zoom. See link below. \nIf we think back to our favorite books or movies\, it’s often a line of dialog we remember. Lines such as “After all\, tomorrow is another day.” “You had me at Hello.” \nHow do we writers create dialogue that sounds natural? Dialogue that is character-specific? If you want to write lines that grab your readers and give them an emotional experience\, then join us on May 2 and hear how Perry creates dialog fearlessly. \nPerry is the author of the novel Upon this Rock\, of which reviewer Armistead Maupin\, author of Tales of the City\, said\, “Perry has written an elegant\, twisty thriller in which a gay couple investigates a mysterious suicide in a scenic Italian hill town. It’s not hard to imagine that this book could do for Orvieto [Italy] what Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil did for Savannah.” \nAfter graduating from the State University of New York at Fredonia\, Perry worked as a freelance writer and publicist in Washington\, DC\, with stints along the way as a cocktail pianist and a catering waiter for swank Capitol Hill parties and presidential inaugurations (that’s another book\, still underway). In San Francisco\, he wrote for such publications as The Advocate\, American Theatre\, Opera Now\, Omni\, and the San Francisco Examiner. In 1997\, he was offered the job of his childhood fantasies: working his way around the world by ship as editor of the onboard newspaper for the glorious Crystal Symphony. When speaking of his travels\, Perry likes to recount Mark Twain’s line: “Travel is fatal to prejudice\, bigotry\, and narrow-mindedness\, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.” \nWhen not writing\, Perry and his husband\, along with dedicated associates\, run a public relations and design firm with a bevy of interesting clients—from stars to those with starry eyes. They make their home in Palm Springs\, California. For more information\, check out his website\, www.davidperry.com. \nLink to Join this Zoom Meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89973131287?pwd=UWc4WXRaaDl0OWVQWmgwbTBiNHdVQT09\nMeeting ID: 899 7313 1287\nPassword: 316819

SUMMARY:Nathan Crabbe: Opinion Writing and the Future of Journalism
DESCRIPTION:Nathan Crabbe\, the opinion and engagement editor for the Gainesville Sun will speak at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday\, March 14\, via Zoom. \nSubmitting a letter to the editor or an opinion essay to the Gainesville Sun is one avenue for us writers to use our craft to participate in civic discourse. Nathan Crabbe will give us an inside look at the submission process—what works and what doesn’t—and share his thoughts on the state of print newspapers. He’ll discuss what the “opinion and engagement editor” actually does\, the number of submissions the Sun typically receives\, how he selects what to print\, and how he deals with complaints about his editorial decisions\, among other issues. Crabbe will offer a short presentation in order to allow plenty of time for Q&A. So have your questions ready! \nAt the Sun\, Crabbe’s responsibilities include writing opinion columns and editorials along with editing guest columns and letters to the editor. He has been with the paper since 2005\, previously working as a reporter on the University of Florida and environmental beats. Before that\, he investigated wrongful convictions for the Innocence Institute of Point Park University in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania\, and covered the environmental and county beats as a reporter for the Napa Valley Register in Napa\, California. He lives in Gainesville with his wife and two children. \n\nLink to Join this Zoom Meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89973131287?pwd=UWc4WXRaaDl0OWVQWmgwbTBiNHdVQT09\nMeeting ID: 899 7313 1287\nPassword: 316819 \n

SUMMARY:Writing Screenplays - A Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:When you walk out of a movie theater—remember doing that?—do you ever wish you could write a script? Well\, you can. On Sunday\, February 7\, at 2:30 p.m.\, Wendy Thornton will lead a panel discussion about screenwriting with Gary Gordon\, Shamrock McShane\, and Tom Miller. The program will be held via Zoom (see link at the end of this article.) \nThe four panelists will discuss the basics that answer questions like these: How do you get started? What are the formats that you must follow? How do you structure a movie plot? \nThey will touch on the beginning\, middle\, end\, plot points\, character creation\, character arc\, genre\, and the seeming conflict between creating a tight outline\, yet keeping it loose enough for creative ideas along the way. They will also discuss the use of screenplay software and how to enter various contests. \nWriting scripts is an enjoyable variation of the classic act of writing. Before you know it\, you’ll be envisioning your characters on the silver screen. \nWendy Thornton will begin the discussion. She is working on a screenplay and is the author of several books including Sounding the Depths\, Dear Oprah Or How I Beat Cancer and Learned to Love Daytime TV\, and a  mystery\, Bear-Trapped: In a Trashy Hollywood Novel. Her stories and essays have been published in a variety of journals and books including Riverteeth\, Epiphany\, and MacGuffin. She was nominated for a Pushcart Prize\, has been Editor’s Pick on Salon.com multiple times\, and has received numerous awards. Her works have been published in England\, Ireland\, Scotland\, Australia\, and India. And somehow\, Thornton still finds time to teach writing at Santa Fe College in Gainesville\, Florida. \nGary Gordon is an author\, songwriter\, screenwriter\, travel writer\, comedy writer\, and playwright\, who says he probably spends “too much time on Facebook.” He spent over twenty years in Los Angeles\, California\, learning the craft of screenwriting and working on several works-for-hire. After returning to Gainesville he participated\, before COVID\, in the WAG Screenwriting pod and taught screenwriting at Santa Fe College. \nShamrock McShane\, writer\, teacher\, and actor\, is a 1986 graduate of the University of Florida’s Creative Writing Program. He is the author of the novel Rock Beauty and the nonfiction novel Hall of Fools. As a screenwriter\, he collaborated with his son\, director Mike McShane\, on films including The Votive Pit\, You Are Not Frank Sinatra\, and It’s All Good. A Shakespearean-trained actor as well as a prize-wining playwright\, his acting credits include playing Mercutio\, Macbeth\, and Prospero\, as well as Willy Loman in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. \nTom Miller is a playwright\, screenwriter\, performance artist\, musician\, director\, sound designer\, and actor. He hosts an avant-garde variety show\, The Tom Miller Show\, a staple of entertainment in Gainesville\, Florida\, since 1984. In its current form\, the show is known as the Reverend Angeldust’s Tabernacle of Hedonism. Miller says it is the “longest-running variety show in the United States.” Miller holds a BA in Theatre from the University of Florida and an MFA in Screenwriting from the David Lynch MFA Screenwriter’s Program at Maharishi International University of Management in Fairfield\, Iowa. SUMMARY:Bob Dekle: Research for Nonfiction
DESCRIPTION:If you missed this talk\, you can read a summary of the talk on Bob Dekle’s blog.\nOn Sunday\, January 10\, George R. (Bob) Dekle\, Sr.\, will discuss the process he uses for writing and researching nonfiction accounts of historic trials. The template for his talk will be a book in pre-publication with Kent State University Press: Old Shakespeare and the East River Ripper: A Gilded Age Mystery\, \nThe book tells the story of a Jack-the-Ripper style murder in a New York City brothel investigated by the “American Sherlock Holmes” and prosecuted by New York’s greatest Assistant District Attorney. The case was beset with issues of classism\, racism\, illegal immigration\, police corruption\, agenda-driven journalism\, and questions of false conviction. The author attempts to sort through the morass of conflicting claims to find the truth. \nDekle served for two years as an assistant public defender and thirty years as a prosecutor\, handling dozens of homicide cases. \nHis last-published book\, Six Capsules: The Gilded Age Murder of Helen Potts\, was awarded a Gold Medal by the Florida Authors and Publishers Association and Silver Medals by the Independent Publishers Association Book Awards and Royal Palm Literary Awards of the Florida Writers Association\, all in nonfiction categories. \nDekle is the author of many other books including The Last Murder: The Investigation\, Prosecution\, and Execution of Ted Bundy and Prairie Defender: The Murder Trials of Abraham Lincoln (winner of a scholarship award from the Illinois Historical Society and Gold and Silver Medals from the Florida Authors and Publishers Association in nonfiction categories). He has also coauthored other books including The Lindbergh Kidnapping Case: A Critique of the Trial of Bruno Richard Hauptmann. \nFor a more complete list of Dekle’s books\, check out his Authors Guild page. \nLink to Join this Zoom Meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89973131287?pwd=UWc4WXRaaDl0OWVQWmgwbTBiNHdVQT09\nMeeting ID: 899 7313 1287\nPassword: 316819

SUMMARY:Ann Henry: How to Write a Successful Query Pitch for Memoir or Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Ann Henry\, novelist and author of The Novel Pitch\, will speak at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday\, December 6\, via Zoom. \nSubmitting a compelling query letter to a literary agent\, editor\, or scout is the first step for most writers hoping to break into the traditional publishing market\, and the heart of that letter is the pitch. Ann Henry will give us the tools and information we need to write a professional and engaging pitch that can entice the gatekeepers of publishing houses to request to see examples of our work\, possibly resulting in a publishing contract. She will give us industry guidelines\, explain the elements that should be included in a pitch\, demonstrate different approaches we can take to present our stories to best advantage\, and share with us methods for reducing word count to the desired length. Henry’s presentation will take about half an hour\, after which she will be available for questions. \nA native of north Mississippi\, Ann earned a BA in Journalism from the University of Mississippi. After graduation\, she worked for years as a newspaper reporter and editor in South Florida and in the British West Indies and later as an English teacher\, magazine writer\, radio news reporter\, and television producer. SUMMARY:Susie Baxter: Writing Memoir
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, November 8\, Susie Baxter will discuss the importance of leaving a legacy. She will share how she wrote about her own life experiences in her memoir\, Pumping Sunshine\, which won two 2018 Royal Palm Literary Awards: first place in memoir and second place overall. She is quick to credit her WAG pod mates who gave her feedback and encouragement during the writing process. She is also the author of C. G. & Ethel: A Family History\, and Write Your Memoir: One Story at a Time. Her presentation will feature tips and exercises from Write Your Memoir. \nBaxter says\, “I never expected to become a writer; I wanted to be an artist.” She majored in art and worked as a graphic designer before going with a medical publishing house in St. Louis. There\, she served as an editorial assistant\, developmental editor\, executive editor\, and finally publisher. As an executive editor\, she drafted proposals for clinical reference books and recruited top physicians to write them. But upon the loss of a beloved grandmother\, she came to recognize the importance of leaving a legacy and began writing about her own life. \nBaxter has been an active supporter of WAG since its founding in 2009\, serving in numerous positions including president and creative nonfiction editor for Bacopa. She now serves with Wendy Thornton on the program committee (she volunteered to present this program when the booked speaker had to cancel). \nOnce a year\, she teaches a memoir writing course at Santa Fe College. SUMMARY:Local Author Series - Marie Q. Rogers
DESCRIPTION:The link to this Zoom program is shown at the end of the article. \nAuthor Marie Q. Rogers asks you to imagine yourself taken without warning from all you know—family\, home\, friends—to a distant world where people possess abilities you didn’t know existed. Such is Fern’s experience in Trials by Fire\, the first book in Rogers’ two-book science fiction series\, The Long Road to Namai. \nTrapped in a house fire\, Fern’s only means of escape is by a paranormal gift called “wrashiru.” But once safe\, she’s unable to return home. Her rescuers are highly psychic but lead a primitive lifestyle\, hiding from the alien race that had enslaved them. While dealing with homesickness and grief\, Fern struggles with a new language\, unusual customs\, and unrequited love. Her efforts to fit in often fall short\, and she suffers from isolation and depression. Despite this\, she becomes a contributing member of the community. In the end\, she performs a vital act that saves lives. \nAuthor Marie Q. Rogers\nAmong the author’s many interests is edible wild plants and herbs\, and her knowledge of wild-crafting came in handy in writing this book. You may find her rambling the back roads\, exploring historical sites\, and enjoying the mountains. When not traveling\, she lives in the woods of North Florida\, putting the finishing touches on several novels. Her short pieces have appeared in Bacopa Literary Review and Pilcrow & Dagger\, and she posts creative nonfiction on her website\, marieqrogers.com. \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81992267053?pwd=c0VyOEI4MlNMc0VTdXNtNUNKMjlDZz09 \nMeeting ID: 819 9226 7053\nPassword: 417546 \n

SUMMARY:J. N. Fishhawk: The Hunt for Live Language: Finding Poetry Everywhere
DESCRIPTION:Program via Zoom. See Zoom link at end of this article.\n \nJ. N. Fishhawk\, Poetry Editor for Bacopa Literary Review\, will speak on Sunday\, July 12\, at 2:30 p.m. \nUnless we are actually sitting down to read\, listen to\, or compose a poem\, most of us don’t think about poetry much\, if at all. For National Poetry Month\, Fishhawk will speak from his own experience of a life in poetry—reading it\, writing it\, listening to it\, organizing events around it\, watching it performed live on stage\, and seeking it in all aspects of life. He will argue that poetry is all around us\, all the time\, and is easily accessible to all. \nFishhawk is a Florida born poet and writer who has called the swamplands of North Central Florida home for over 26 years. His work has appeared in a variety of print and online journals\, such as Steel Toe Review. \nHe is also the author of two poetry chapbooks\, and his first-in-a-series children’s book Billy and Tugboat Sallyforth\, with coauthor Johnny Rocket Ibanez\, débuted at the 2020 Sunshine State Book Festival. \nJoin the Zoom meeting with this link: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89973131287 \nMeeting ID: 899 7313 1287\n

DESCRIPTION:NOTE: YOU MAY VIEW THIS PRESENTATION HERE: \nhttps://youtu.be/MFOCMzIaFXA \n  \nAuthor and blogger Jolene MacFadden will share with you the Top Ten Ways to Market Your Book for Free on Sunday\, May 3\, at 2:30 p.m. via Zoom. This online program is in lieu of her scheduled Millhopper Library presentation. \nIf you are an author or plan to be\, don’t miss this. To join\, just click on the link below and use the password provided. To learn more about Zoom\, click here.\n\nMacFadden promotes North Florida area authors through her website\, North Florida Writers Tour. She has already interviewed and promoted several WAG members and is looking for more book authors to highlight. \nShe is the author of Insider’s Guide to Campground Hosting in Florida Parks\, a resource book about volunteer workamping on Florida’s public lands. According to workamper.com\, the word workamper was trademarked in 1987. It’s an individual who travels the country and works in a campground and lives in an RV. \nMacFadden travels the state of Florida in an old Class A RV with her mom and sometimes with her youngest daughter. They started visiting state parks\, just taking pictures and videos and writing reviews. But they enjoyed the experience so much that they decided to become volunteers at the state parks. In return\, they get to stay free for up to four months at campsites. \n“When researching the material for my book\,” MacFadden said\, “I found that there are opportunities and needs in all of Florida’s public lands and wildlife management areas. We have also volunteered in a couple of national parks\, forests\, county parks and national wildlife areas\, so I have enough material for a few more books. Along with the volunteering\, I am learning more about nature photography\, creating handcrafted bead and wire jewelry\, videography\, and our environment.” \nShe lives in Lake City\, Florida\, and is currently doing research to write a history of the people and events that have happened at the newly renovated\, historically registered Blanche Hotel in downtown Lake City. \nIn her spare time\, MacFadden says she writes articles for sixteen different websites including her own: https://jolenesbooksandmore.com; https://websandblogsforwriters.com; https://swconlinestore.com; https://southernladiesadventures.com.

SUMMARY:Create a Following Online. What Works. What Doesn't.
DESCRIPTION:Author\, nutritionist\, and fitness guru Caroline Anaya\, who writes an online newsletter\, “FitBits\,” is WAG’s March 1 speaker. In her newsletter\, now in its seventh year\, Anaya writes about food\, nutrition\, and her life. \nAt the March meeting\, she will expand on relevant sales lore\, such as “Sell yourself\, and your product will sell itself\,” refining it for writers who would rather spend their time writing than marketing. But the techniques can apply to anyone who wishes to gain a following with the use of the Internet (visual artists\, for example). \nAnaya’s professional years involved research in developing the original Minimum Daily Requirements with the USDA and an infant formula for use in Nigeria under UNICEF. She helped set up standards for fishery products for the USDI. She then turned to industry-based food technology\, developing Metrecal™\, the first diet food\, and many other products. She has published a dozen scientific papers and articles. \nHer autobiography\, The Bite of History: Patriarchy Messing with Me and Food for 85 Years\, has received excellent reviews. One reviewer wrote\, “The story of an intrepid woman sincerely sharing the whole spectrum of her life without shying away from the grueling\, even horrible encounters and tough choices. The nutritional information in the appendix is very enlightening. You’ll never look at the USDA nutritional pyramid the same way again.” \nAnaya stays healthy with light meals of natural foods\, deep sleep\, daily yoga\, and rides her tricycle down a wooded trail near her home.

SUMMARY:Local Authors Series - Elaine Beem Robinson
DESCRIPTION:Note this author reading will be held in the children’s department Story Woods Room. \nElaine Robinson will read from her illustrated poetic story\, Uncommon Scents\, which tells the tale of Marvin\, a polite but bullied and lonely little muskrat\, who lives in a forest where all the other animals are smarter\, swifter\, and more talented than he is. At least that’s what Marvin thinks. But then Marvin meets a brand-new friend who helps him realize just how gifted a modest little muskrat really is. This illustrated story is a tribute to bullied little critters everywhere—those with four feet\, or six feet\, or even only two feet. \n \nElaine Beem Robinson \nAn author and illustrator\, Elaine was born in New Haven\, Connecticut\, and moved to Florida as a child. She holds a BS from the Florida Institute of Technology and a MS from the University of Florida. As a young person\, she was advised against pursuing a career in the arts and instead was directed into the unforgivingly complex world of physics\, biochemistry\, and molecular biology\, where flights of fancy are actively discouraged. Many years followed at the University of Florida working as a research microbiologist\, where she contributed to the plethora of articles written on the misdeeds of bacteria. Now retired\, she is free to write about and draw a world of her own invention\, a world of utter fiction\, generally told in the form of children’s poetry. She lives in Gainesville\, Florida\, along with husband Ron\, Snuffy the Schnauzer\, and several retired racehorses who reside in the backyard and are not asked to do much else. \nUncommon Scents \nOf all the animals in the forest\, Marvin Muskrat was the poorest\, the lowliest and the saddest\, too  All the other animals picked on him because they were smarter\, swifter\, and more courageous than he was. Leastways\, that’s what Marvin believed. But was it really true? \nWith the help of a brand-new friend\, Marvin Muskrat learned just how special he really was. This illustrated story\, told in verse\, is a tribute to all the bullied little critters everywhere—those with four feet\, or six feet\, or even only two feet.

SUMMARY:Jill Ciment to Speak at Downtown Library
DESCRIPTION:In lieu of a January program at the Millhopper Library\, WAG members and guests are invited to attend author Jill Ciment’s talk about her latest book at the Alachua County Library Headquarters\, meeting room A\, from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. The library’s website states: \n \nUniversity of Florida English professor Jill Ciment has written seven novels\, a memoir\, and a collection of short stories. Her novel Heroic Measures was made into the film Five Flights Up starring Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton. She has received honors including a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship and a Guggenheim fellowship. \nCiment’s new book\, The Body in Question\, starts in a jury holding room as two jurors on a murder trial for a teenage girl who is charged with killing her toddler brother begin a torrid love affair while they are sequestered. The central character\, juror C-12\, a married female photographer\, comes to realize that her “one last dalliance before she gets too old” with juror F-17 will take on more serious consequences when the other jurors start to figure out what they’re up to. When one of the other jurors sends an anonymous letter revealing their affair\, that’s when things get really complicated.

SUMMARY:Local Author Series - Cindy Bertelsen
DESCRIPTION:Just in time for Thanksgiving\, Cynthia Bertelsen will discuss the challenges of cooking with historic cookbooks\, using hands-on instructions from her book A Hastiness of Cooks and examples from the first American cookbook\, from 1796\, Amelia Simmon’s American Cookery. A skilled cook and culinary historian\, Bertelsen is also the author of Mushroom: A Global History. \nCindy Bertelsen \nTrained as an historian\, librarian\, and nutritionist\, Cynthia D. Bertelsen is the author of Mushroom: A Global History (Reaktion Books U.K.\, 2013) and A Hastiness of Cooks: A Practical Handbook for Use in Deciphering the Mysteries of Historic Recipes and Cookbooks (Turquoise Moon Press\, 2019). She has also published essays\, articles\, book reviews\, and photographs in numerous print and online publications. Volunteering with the Peacock-Harper Culinary History Group at Virginia Tech for over ten years provided her with a deep knowledge of historic cookbooks. And her cooking skills blossomed through years of living and working in various countries\, specifically Mexico\, Paraguay\, Honduras\, Haiti\, Morocco\, and Burkina Faso. Cynthia also attended cooking classes in Paris\, France\, at Le Cordon Bleu École de Cuisine et de Pâtisserie. In 2011\, the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) awarded her a Julia Child Independent Scholar grant to study the impact of immigration on the future of French cuisine.  \nA Hastiness of Cooks: A Practical Handbook for Use in Deciphering the Mysteries of Historic Recipes and Cookbooks\, For Living-History Reenactors\, Historians\, Writers\, Chefs\, Archaeologists\, and\, of Course\, Cooks \nThanks to digitization\, hundreds of historic cookbooks are now available online. However\, several stumbling blocks―archaic language\, obtuse instructions\, bewildering ingredients\, etc.―prevent many dedicated cooks\, novelists\, historical reenactors\, researchers\, and others from benefiting fully from these resources. And that’s where Cynthia Bertelsen’s book comes in. A Hastiness of Cooks: A Practical Handbook for Use in Deciphering the Mysteries of Historic Recipes and Cookbooks\, For Living-History Reenactors\, Historians\, Writers\, Chefs\, Archaeologists\, and\, of Course\, Cooks shows readers step by step how to 1) recreate historic recipes and 2) analyze cookbooks for telling details that add hints of authenticity to the daily dinner table\, culinary reenactment at a Renaissance fair or historic site\, a banquet scene in a Tudor-era novel\, a Games of Thrones party\, or perhaps an unusual scholarly paper. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white ink drawings by Chicago artist Courtney Nzeribe\, A Hastiness of Cooks brings the world of historic cookbooks to life. And to the kitchen.

SUMMARY:Local Author Series - James Williams
DESCRIPTION:Author James F. Williams will discuss and read from his first novel\, The Pedestrians\, a wry\, social science-fiction thriller. Set in 2097’s Manhattan Island City\, a gated community\, data hunter Dale Evans tracks evidence to solve a brutal murder on Wall Street\, the city’s red-light district. A terrifying plunge from a flying taxi forces Evans to reconstruct his identity while working the brutal case. He and partner Jimmy Ha encounter lab-grown child clones\, fleets of self-assembling robots and an industrialist serial killer. Evans also finds love amidst masses of homeless Manhattanites\, which the immigrant one percent now mockingly call “the pedestrians.” \nJames Williams \nJames was born in Gainesville\, Florida\, and graduated from GHS with an Associates degree from UF before he began his travels. Since then\, he’s lived\, worked and published miscellanea in Wichita\, Kansas; Boston; New York City; and possibly Shanghai\, China. \nReturning to Florida\, he became writer and editor of The Lake Region Monitor (a Keystone Heights/Melrose weekly newspaper)\, serving for nine years. Since then\, he has served as stringer or substitute writer/editor for the Monitor\, the Bradford County Telegraph and the Union County Times until his semi-retirement in 2014. He writes occasional articles on business and local government. \nThe Pedestrians \nAuthor James F. Williams describes his first novel\, The Pedestrians\, as a wry social science-fiction thriller. He is proud to say it has all the clichés of 20th century sci-fi potboilers: flying solar cars\, robots\, clones\, mile-high buildings. Set in 2097\, thinly veiled\, the Big Apple is now Manhattan Island City\, rid of its needless boroughs. The Stock Exchange has fled to Washington to be near the power center and the national treasury. Crime and homelessness are rampant. \nData hunter Dale Evans tracks evidence to solve a bizarre murder on Wall Street\, the city’s red-light district. Moving around MIC\, a gated community\, Evans loses his identity and fights to regain it while encountering lab-grown clones\, fleets of robots and a murderous industrialist. Evans also finds love amidst the masses of homeless the immigrant one percent mockingly call “the pedestrians.” \n

SUMMARY:Local Author Series - Gail Rose Thompson
DESCRIPTION:Note: Held in Meeting Room B of the Alachua Library Headquarters Branch \nGail Rose Thompson will present her nonfiction Iran from Crown to Turban\, relating tales of life in Iran during the time of the Pahlavi Crown\, the revolution and post-revolutionary times. Her images of the country are far different from what the press tells us. She lived there in the 1970s\, visited two years ago\, and is frequently in contact with friends living there now. Her entertaining stories depict a country of which we are misinformed. \nGail Rose Thompson \nGail grew up in Ontario\, Canada\, where as a young girl she became involved in riding and training horses. She graduated from Hamilton Teachers College and taught school for several years before she traveled to Iran\, where she worked for the Imperial Court of Shah Mohamed Reza Pahlavi during the “Golden Years” of the 1970s. While there\, she witnessed the country’s development as the leading power in the Middle East. Upon her arrival in Richmond\, Virginia from Iran\, she opened a riding school which\, over the next forty years\, developed into a renowned training facility for Hunter/Jumper horses and riders. She returned to Iran in the fall of 2017\, where she met up with old friends and spent time touring and learning about the life in the Islamic Republic of Iran as it is now. She currently lives in Ocala\, Florida. Her memoir All the Shah’s Horses has been well received. \nIran From Crown To Turbans \nPeople are curious about how life in Iran today\, under the Islamic republic\, differs from life as it was during the reign of Shah Mohamad Reza Pahlavi. Gail Rose Thompson\, who lived there in the 1970s and worked for the imperial court as the Shah’s horse trainer\, has many tales about life during that time and also about the way of life in the country post-revolution. She visited Iran in 2017 after an absence of forty years\, the first ex-employee of the Shah to return. She paints a picture of a beautiful historic country that dates from the fourth millennium BCE\, when the Persian Empire was the most powerful kingdom in the ancient world. Iranians are proud of their heritage and are polite\, hospitable\, and extremely family-oriented. Iran from Crown to Turbans is a fascinating book of stories that will enlighten the reader about a country that has been misrepresented.
