DESCRIPTION:Cassie Dandridge Selleck\, author of an Amazon bestseller The Pecan Man\, will present a program for writers on the basics of the Story Code™. Please join us on Sunday\, September 10\, 2023\, at 2:30 pm at the Milhopper Branch of the Alachua County Public Library. \nHow do you predict the success of a novel or play? Is it even possible? What makes a good story? \nIf you’ve been writing for a while\, you’ve undoubtedly learned how plot drives a story. And\, yes\, plot is important. However\, according to researcher Katherine J. Farmer\, the most accurate way to predict the appeal of a story to a national audience lies in the role functions of the characters. \nThe Story Code™ is a system of narrative analysis discovered\, developed\, and substantiated by Farmer through extensive research. While a deep analysis of a particular work is complex\, the basics of the system are relatively simple and incredibly helpful to writers. \nUnlike the classic plot mountain and other structure-based writing methods\, the Story Code™ does not focus on plot\, event structures\, or archetypal patterns like the hero’s journey. Instead\, this system’s character-centered lens reveals structures that focus on relationships and their conflicting power dynamics. A key finding in Farmer’s research is that story is all about power. Things to consider include: \n– Who has the power in the story and who wants it? \n– What are characters willing to do to get or keep power? \n– How does power shift over the course of the story? \n– How does the power balance change at the end of the story? \nThe Story Code™ shows you how to track the power and harness it for the good of your story. \nIn addition to character functions\, Selleck will discuss the importance of identifiable themes within each story. Farmer’s research found that when the theme was not clear or not easy to state\, the work received low ratings in appeal and quality. Writers often debate the importance or relevance of theme\, but the findings affirm its central nature. \nSelleck will talk about the impact of the audience’s emotional response to the end of the story. \nShe will also discuss how the kind of hero who emerges will determine the story’s genre. Each genre of story comes with a pattern. Understanding these patterns helps writers decide what kinds of stories they want to create\, and it can provide a roadmap on how to get there. \nIn addition to The Pecan Man\, Selleck has written three other novels of character-driven Southern Fiction. She holds a BFA in Creative Writing from Goddard College and a Master of Arts in Communication and Storytelling from East Tennessee State University. She currently teaches Public Speaking at the University of South Carolina but still makes her home on the Suwannee River in Mayo\, Florida.

SUMMARY:Creating Engaging Characters
DESCRIPTION:Join members of the Writers Alliance on Sunday\, May 7\, at the Millhopper branch of the Alachua County Library where Mary Bast and Wendy Thornton will present a program on Creating Engaging Characters. \nBast will discuss the use of the Enneagram\, a device that has been used for years by writers and screenwriters as a powerful tool to develop original and dimensional characters. She will give a simple overview of the nine Enneagram personalities along with fictional examples of each. \n“Whether you are writing memoir or fiction\,” she says\, “you can easily adapt this approach to strengthen your character’s descriptions and actions.” \nThornton will discuss Developing your Character’s Backstory. How do you create a character that will be engaging to your readers? “Sometimes it’s important for the writer to know more about a character than the reader\,” Thornton says. “If you develop the backstory\, you may be able to write more realistically\, and develop your character’s story in a more engaging way.” \nSome things to consider: \n\n     –  Is the character a good guy or a bad guy?\n     –  Is the character super-normal or super-defective?\n     –  What are your characters’ quirks?\n     –  What are their backgrounds?\n     –  How do you decide these things?\n\nThornton will answer these questions and offer suggestions and outlines to help you create your characters before you start writing your story. \nIf you would like to learn more before May 7\, go to “Deepening Written Characters with Mary Bast.” \nThere are also a number of books that delve into this topic. The most comprehensive is The Literary Enneagram: Characters from the Inside Out\, in which author Judith Searle shows how knowledge of this model can help writers create “credible character arcs and character-driven plot twists” and “sharpen conflicts between characters to make dramatic situations more compelling.” \nMary Bast\nBast has a PhD in Social Psychology. She retired in 2020 from a forty-year career\, first as Director of Executive Development for Federated Department Stores\, then for a decade as an independent leadership consultant\, and another twenty years as a personal coach and mentor using the Enneagram model of nine personalities. In addition to her published poetry and memoir\, she is the author of five Enneagram-based books that feature fictionalized stories of clients’ transformational journeys\, including the first Enneagram coaching book\, Out of the Box Coaching with the Enneagram. \nWendy Thornton\nThornton\, a Pushcart Prize nominee\, is a prolific freelance writer who helped found the Writers Alliance of Gainesville. Her many works have been published in Riverteeth\, Epiphany\, MacGuffin and other literary journals and books. Her memoir\, Dear Oprah: How I Beat Cancer and Learned to Love Daytime TV\, was published in 2013. Her latest book of essays\, Sounding the Depths: Memories with Music published in 2018. Bear Trapped: Blowback (June 2020) is the most recent mystery in her Bear Trapped Series. She has also published two books of short stories: Arrested Motion (2022) and Hanging On (2023). She teaches community ed writing courses at Santa Fe College in Gainesville.

But the classic ghost-story tradition has recently enjoyed a resurgence\, thanks to dedicated anthologists and publishing houses. Hundreds have been republished. \nSupernatural tales are often dismissed as pulp fiction–not considered literature. But did you know that Harriet Beecher Stowe\, Charles Dickens\, Arthur Conan Doyle\, Edith Wharton\, Henry James\, Rudyard Kipling\, Frances Hodgson Burnett\, Virginia Woolf\, and Agatha Christie penned ghost stories? Or that Thomas Hardy penned a zombie poem? Did you know that Freud wrote a thesis on the uncanny? \nWhat exactly does uncanny mean\, anyway? It’s deep and fascinating! Far beyond a tingle or a jump scare\, there are psychological\, historical\, and sociological layers to a solid ghost story. \nCome to the Millhopper branch of the Alachua County Library on October 9 (just before Halloween!) for a talk by ghost-story author J. Their talk will include a discussion of: \n\n     – the inspiration for the play\,\n     – the software used to create the movie\,\n     – type of equipment used\,\n     – filming of the movie\, and\n     – how they entered and did so well in screenwriting contests.\n\nMcShane\, who stars in the film\, is a Shakespearean-trained actor whose credits include the award for Best Supporting Actor at the 2016 Atlanta Black Theatre Festival. \nWith 30 years of service as a public school teacher and a passion for the arts\, McShane is also the author of Hall of Fools\, a revealing look at education in the U.S.; and his narration of Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is available as an audiobook. First\, you identify what you wish to write. Next\, you find the time and a writing routine that is sustainable. Or do you need to establish a speaking schedule? \nPerhaps it’s a curious balance of all the above and more? DESCRIPTION:“Pssst\, want to know a secret?” asks Hugh Suggs. “There’s no bottom you can’t come back from if you are determined to get back up\, are willing to ask for help\, and accept it when it’s offered. \nSuggs will be our speaker on Sunday\, January 9\, at 2:30 p.m.\, in Meeting Room A on the upper level of the downtown library. His poignant story\, “From one Field to Another\,“ won first place for creative nonfiction in the 2019 Bacopa Literary Review. He has now written a powerful memoir dedicated to his illiterate farming father’s struggle\, inside the abject poverty of itinerate farm work\, to raise six children—children who’d go on to become teachers\, county managers\, decorated soldiers\, and successful politicians. \nWritten in novel style in a series of forty vignettes\, the reader walks into Wise’s Drugs with Suggs’s father in 1945 as the storyteller journeys back to his sharecropping roots in order to discover how he became the person who ended up beneath the wheels of a loaded log truck. While he lost his legs in that accident\, he gained an enhanced perspective in his writing. \nHis talk will center around how he combines his open-mic-honed prose poetry with the challenge of writing about a seventy-year journey from his changing perspective; first as that of a gifted child laborer who becomes a budding poet and then as a baggage-carrying\, struggling adult whose bad choices left him beneath those wheels. \nHe will be highlighting this technique by reading excerpts from both his finished manuscript of creative nonfiction\, “Rind and All\,” and performing pieces from a collection of poetry he’s calling “Back on this Side / A Second Chance at Enlightenment\,” whose lines kept finding their way into his memoir’s manuscript. \nThere is free parking around the downtown library and side streets. Quinn Jones house\, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 27\, 2010\, is located at 1013 NW 7th Avenue\, Gainesville\, Florida\, 32601. \n\n\nThe home is now a museum honoring A. Quinn Jones\, who in 1923 became the first principal of Lincoln High School. Mr. Jones was a leading force in advancing educational opportunities for African Americans in Gainesville. \nO’Connor is a writer\, an art historian\, and a musician. She holds degrees in art\, art history\, and American history from Ohio University. For twenty years she taught art history at the University of Florida and at Santa Fe College.

If you want to write lines that grab your readers and give them an emotional experience\, then join us on May 2 and hear how Perry creates dialog fearlessly. \nPerry is the author of the novel Upon this Rock\, of which reviewer Armistead Maupin\, author of Tales of the City\, said\, “Perry has written an elegant\, twisty thriller in which a gay couple investigates a mysterious suicide in a scenic Italian hill town. Nathan Crabbe will give us an inside look at the submission process—what works and what doesn’t—and share his thoughts on the state of print newspapers. He’ll discuss what the “opinion and engagement editor” actually does\, the number of submissions the Sun typically receives\, how he selects what to print\, and how he deals with complaints about his editorial decisions\, among other issues. Crabbe will offer a short presentation in order to allow plenty of time for Q&A. SUMMARY:Writing Screenplays - A Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:When you walk out of a movie theater—remember doing that?—do you ever wish you could write a script? Well\, you can. On Sunday\, February 7\, at 2:30 p.m.\, Wendy Thornton will lead a panel discussion about screenwriting with Gary Gordon\, Shamrock McShane\, and Tom Miller. The program will be held via Zoom (see link at the end of this article.) \nThe four panelists will discuss the basics that answer questions like these: How do you get started? What are the formats that you must follow? How do you structure a movie plot? \nThey will touch on the beginning\, middle\, end\, plot points\, character creation\, character arc\, genre\, and the seeming conflict between creating a tight outline\, yet keeping it loose enough for creative ideas along the way. They will also discuss the use of screenplay software and how to enter various contests. \nWriting scripts is an enjoyable variation of the classic act of writing. Before you know it\, you’ll be envisioning your characters on the silver screen. \nWendy Thornton will begin the discussion. She is working on a screenplay and is the author of several books including Sounding the Depths\, Dear Oprah Or How I Beat Cancer and Learned to Love Daytime TV\, and a  mystery\, Bear-Trapped: In a Trashy Hollywood Novel. Her stories and essays have been published in a variety of journals and books including Riverteeth\, Epiphany\, and MacGuffin. She was nominated for a Pushcart Prize\, has been Editor’s Pick on Salon.com multiple times\, and has received numerous awards. Her works have been published in England\, Ireland\, Scotland\, Australia\, and India. And somehow\, Thornton still finds time to teach writing at Santa Fe College in Gainesville\, Florida. \nGary Gordon is an author\, songwriter\, screenwriter\, travel writer\, comedy writer\, and playwright\, who says he probably spends “too much time on Facebook.” He spent over twenty years in Los Angeles\, California\, learning the craft of screenwriting and working on several works-for-hire. After returning to Gainesville he participated\, before COVID\, in the WAG Screenwriting pod and taught screenwriting at Santa Fe College. \nShamrock McShane\, writer\, teacher\, and actor\, is a 1986 graduate of the University of Florida’s Creative Writing Program. He is the author of the novel Rock Beauty and the nonfiction novel Hall of Fools. As a screenwriter\, he collaborated with his son\, director Mike McShane\, on films including The Votive Pit\, You Are Not Frank Sinatra\, and It’s All Good. A Shakespearean-trained actor as well as a prize-wining playwright\, his acting credits include playing Mercutio\, Macbeth\, and Prospero\, as well as Willy Loman in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. \nTom Miller is a playwright\, screenwriter\, performance artist\, musician\, director\, sound designer\, and actor. He hosts an avant-garde variety show\, The Tom Miller Show\, a staple of entertainment in Gainesville\, Florida\, since 1984. In its current form\, the show is known as the Reverend Angeldust’s Tabernacle of Hedonism. Miller says it is the “longest-running variety show in the United States.” Miller holds a BA in Theatre from the University of Florida and an MFA in Screenwriting from the David Lynch MFA Screenwriter’s Program at Maharishi International University of Management in Fairfield\, Iowa. DESCRIPTION:If you missed this talk\, you can read a summary of the talk on Bob Dekle’s blog.\nOn Sunday\, January 10\, George R. (Bob) Dekle\, Sr.\, will discuss the process he uses for writing and researching nonfiction accounts of historic trials. The template for his talk will be a book in pre-publication with Kent State University Press: Old Shakespeare and the East River Ripper: A Gilded Age Mystery\, \nThe book tells the story of a Jack-the-Ripper style murder in a New York City brothel investigated by the “American Sherlock Holmes” and prosecuted by New York’s greatest Assistant District Attorney. The case was beset with issues of classism\, racism\, illegal immigration\, police corruption\, agenda-driven journalism\, and questions of false conviction. The author attempts to sort through the morass of conflicting claims to find the truth. \nDekle served for two years as an assistant public defender and thirty years as a prosecutor\, handling dozens of homicide cases.  \nHis last-published book\, Six Capsules: The Gilded Age Murder of Helen Potts\, was awarded a Gold Medal by the Florida Authors and Publishers Association and Silver Medals by the Independent Publishers Association Book Awards and Royal Palm Literary Awards of the Florida Writers Association\, all in nonfiction categories. \nDekle is the author of many other books including The Last Murder: The Investigation\, Prosecution\, and Execution of Ted Bundy and Prairie Defender: The Murder Trials of Abraham Lincoln (winner of a scholarship award from the Illinois Historical Society and Gold and Silver Medals from the Florida Authors and Publishers Association in nonfiction categories). DESCRIPTION:Ann Henry\, novelist and author of The Novel Pitch\, will speak at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday\, December 6\, via Zoom. \nSubmitting a compelling query letter to a literary agent\, editor\, or scout is the first step for most writers hoping to break into the traditional publishing market\, and the heart of that letter is the pitch. Ann Henry will give us the tools and information we need to write a professional and engaging pitch that can entice the gatekeepers of publishing houses to request to see examples of our work\, possibly resulting in a publishing contract. She will give us industry guidelines\, explain the elements that should be included in a pitch\, demonstrate different approaches we can take to present our stories to best advantage\, and share with us methods for reducing word count to the desired length. Henry’s presentation will take about half an hour\, after which she will be available for questions. \nA native of north Mississippi\, Ann earned a BA in Journalism from the University of Mississippi. After graduation\, she worked for years as a newspaper reporter and editor in South Florida and in the British West Indies and later as an English teacher\, magazine writer\, radio news reporter\, and television producer. She will share how she wrote about her own life experiences in her memoir\, Pumping Sunshine\, which won two 2018 Royal Palm Literary Awards: first place in memoir and second place overall. She is quick to credit her WAG pod mates who gave her feedback and encouragement during the writing process. She is also the author of C. G. & Ethel: A Family History\, and Write Your Memoir: One Story at a Time. Her presentation will feature tips and exercises from Write Your Memoir. \nBaxter says\, “I never expected to become a writer; I wanted to be an artist.” She majored in art and worked as a graphic designer before going with a medical publishing house in St. Louis. There\, she served as an editorial assistant\, developmental editor\, executive editor\, and finally publisher. As an executive editor\, she drafted proposals for clinical reference books and recruited top physicians to write them. But upon the loss of a beloved grandmother\, she came to recognize the importance of leaving a legacy and began writing about her own life. \nBaxter has been an active supporter of WAG since its founding in 2009\, serving in numerous positions including president and creative nonfiction editor for Bacopa. Fishhawk\, Poetry Editor for Bacopa Literary Review\, will speak on Sunday\, July 12\, at 2:30 p.m. \nUnless we are actually sitting down to read\, listen to\, or compose a poem\, most of us don’t think about poetry much\, if at all. For National Poetry Month\, Fishhawk will speak from his own experience of a life in poetry—reading it\, writing it\, listening to it\, organizing events around it\, watching it performed live on stage\, and seeking it in all aspects of life. He will argue that poetry is all around us\, all the time\, and is easily accessible to all. \nFishhawk is a Florida born poet and writer who has called the swamplands of North Central Florida home for over 26 years.
