SUMMARY:Writing Accurately About Mental Health Issues - Kassandra Lamb
DESCRIPTION:Kassandra Lamb\, a retired psychotherapist/college professor turned mystery writer\, will speak at the Millhopper Branch of the Alachua County Library at 2:30 p.m. on February 11\, 2024. In her talk\, she will clarify several misconceptions and misrepresentations she has encountered as a reader of fiction. \nWhile most writers are astute observers of human nature\, they may not know the ins and outs of the psychotherapy field or the specific symptoms and etiology of various mental disorders. \nAmong the topics Lamb will discuss are: \n\n     * Confidentiality in the therapeutic relationship\n     * The nature of therapy ~ much more than listening\n     * The difference between schizophrenia and multiple personalities\n     * Terminology ~ psychopath\, sociopath\, or neither\n     * Matching backstory to the mental disorder\n     * The fickle nature of human memory\n\n Lamb says she now spends most of her time with her characters in an alternate universe. She lives and writes in North Central Florida where her husband and her dog catch occasional glimpses of her. \nShe has authored 36 novels/novellas in three mystery series and a romantic suspense trilogy\, plus a guidebook for novice writers\, Someday Is Here! A Beginner’s Guide to Writing and Publishing Your First Book. Her latest Kate Huntington series book is The Twelve Heists of Christmas. \nYou can read more about Lamb and her books at https://kassandralamb.com.

SUMMARY:Writing Accurate Historical Fiction by Ray Allen Smith
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendar! On Sunday\, January 14\, 2024\, at 2:30 p.m.\, Ray Allen Smith\, author of historical novels based in Florida\, will give a talk on how to write accurate historical fiction. \nSmith molds his words into poetry and short stories. According to him\, he came to Florida in the early 1970s to sample fishing and boating. His years in Miami were studded with motoring and sailing throughout the Keys and Bahamas. A move to Leesburg put him back in the woods and ponds. Still an outdoorsman\, he tempers the Florida sun with stints at the computer. \nHis books include So It’s Been Told: Tales From The Riverside (2015) and Oklawaha Run (2018). \nOne reviewer (Indiana reader) said of Oklawaha Run\, “I couldn’t put it down! If you like historical Western thrillers (good ones like Olmstead’s Savage Country) and/or post-civil war Southern drama (such as Cold Mountain) this book is for you. It combines those two genres with the interesting twist of locating the story in Florida (a place the author obviously knows intimately.) Most people don’t associate post-civil war south with Florida–but it is. Most don’t associate Florida with logging or cattle drives–but they were there. And it is written in beautiful poetic language with a superbly fast-paced plot. What a delightful combination of characteristics! I highly recommend it.”

SUMMARY:Character Building: Outside the Box - by Kathy Dobronyi
DESCRIPTION:Kathy Dobronyi\, a passionate storyteller and writer\, will speak at the Writers Alliance of Gainesville meeting on October 8\, 2023\, at 2:30 p.m. at the Millhopper branch of the Alachua County Library. (See the address and map below.) Come join us! The program is free and open to the public. \nEvery writer has strengths and weaknesses in different areas. One writer can think up exciting plot twists for every scene but struggles with bringing characters to the page. Another writer presents sharp dialogue but isn’t so great at creating settings. Dobronyi says she is guilty of being that sort of writer. \n“In my last life\,” she says\, “I was a high school drama coach who taught the development of morgue books to help create characters and scenes. With portfolios of pictures saved in folders\, envelopes\, or three-ring binders\, morgue books help to bring abstract individuals and scenes to life.” She also taught high school special education programs\, introducing students to hands-on projects for language arts\, history\, communication\, and drama. \nDobronyi was born at Fort Monmouth\, New Jersey\, and baptized three years later at Fort Meade in Maryland. She was in Hawaii when it became our fiftieth state and in Vietnam when it became the American War Zone. \nHer narrative memoir\, Under the Wings of a Good Luck Phoenix\, shares her story of being one of 4\,000 American civilians living in Saigon in 1963 when she was twelve. \nShe is now working on her first historical novel\, Echoes of War\, the story of Amos Hillyard\, a seventeen-year-old boy\, who was captured with thirteen other Quakers by the Virginia Militia in Winchester\, Virginia\, on September 23\, 1777\, on the eve of the Battle of Germantown.

SUMMARY:Cracking the Story Code™ - presented by Cassie Selleck
DESCRIPTION:Cassie Dandridge Selleck\, author of an Amazon bestseller The Pecan Man\, will present a program for writers on the basics of the Story Code™. Please join us on Sunday\, September 10\, 2023\, at 2:30 pm at the Milhopper Branch of the Alachua County Public Library. \nHow do you predict the success of a novel or play? Is it even possible? What makes a good story? \nIf you’ve been writing for a while\, you’ve undoubtedly learned how plot drives a story. And\, yes\, plot is important. However\, according to researcher Katherine J. Farmer\, the most accurate way to predict the appeal of a story to a national audience lies in the role functions of the characters. \nThe Story Code™ is a system of narrative analysis discovered\, developed\, and substantiated by Farmer through extensive research. While a deep analysis of a particular work is complex\, the basics of the system are relatively simple and incredibly helpful to writers. \nUnlike the classic plot mountain and other structure-based writing methods\, the Story Code™ does not focus on plot\, event structures\, or archetypal patterns like the hero’s journey. Instead\, this system’s character-centered lens reveals structures that focus on relationships and their conflicting power dynamics. A key finding in Farmer’s research is that story is all about power. Things to consider include: \n– Who has the power in the story and who wants it? \n– What are characters willing to do to get or keep power? \n– How does power shift over the course of the story? \n– How does the power balance change at the end of the story? \nThe Story Code™ shows you how to track the power and harness it for the good of your story. \nIn addition to character functions\, Selleck will discuss the importance of identifiable themes within each story. Farmer’s research found that when the theme was not clear or not easy to state\, the work received low ratings in appeal and quality. Writers often debate the importance or relevance of theme\, but the findings affirm its central nature. \nSelleck will talk about the impact of the audience’s emotional response to the end of the story. \nShe will also discuss how the kind of hero who emerges will determine the story’s genre. Each genre of story comes with a pattern. Understanding these patterns helps writers decide what kinds of stories they want to create\, and it can provide a roadmap on how to get there. \nIn addition to The Pecan Man\, Selleck has written three other novels of character-driven Southern Fiction. She holds a BFA in Creative Writing from Goddard College and a Master of Arts in Communication and Storytelling from East Tennessee State University. She currently teaches Public Speaking at the University of South Carolina but still makes her home on the Suwannee River in Mayo\, Florida.

SUMMARY:Creating Engaging Characters
DESCRIPTION:Join members of the Writers Alliance on Sunday\, May 7\, at the Millhopper branch of the Alachua County Library where Mary Bast and Wendy Thornton will present a program on Creating Engaging Characters. \nBast will discuss the use of the Enneagram\, a device that has been used for years by writers and screenwriters as a powerful tool to develop original and dimensional characters. She will give a simple overview of the nine Enneagram personalities along with fictional examples of each. \n“Whether you are writing memoir or fiction\,” she says\, “you can easily adapt this approach to strengthen your character’s descriptions and actions.” \nThornton will discuss Developing your Character’s Backstory. How do you create a character that will be engaging to your readers? “Sometimes it’s important for the writer to know more about a character than the reader\,” Thornton says. “If you develop the backstory\, you may be able to write more realistically\, and develop your character’s story in a more engaging way.” \nSome things to consider: \n\n     –  Is the character a good guy or a bad guy?\n     –  Is the character super-normal or super-defective?\n     –  What are your characters’ quirks?\n     –  What are their backgrounds?\n     –  How do you decide these things?\n\nThornton will answer these questions and offer suggestions and outlines to help you create your characters before you start writing your story. \nIf you would like to learn more before May 7\, go to “Deepening Written Characters with Mary Bast.” \nThere are also a number of books that delve into this topic. The most comprehensive is The Literary Enneagram: Characters from the Inside Out\, in which author Judith Searle shows how knowledge of this model can help writers create “credible character arcs and character-driven plot twists” and “sharpen conflicts between characters to make dramatic situations more compelling.” \nMary Bast\nBast has a PhD in Social Psychology. She retired in 2020 from a forty-year career\, first as Director of Executive Development for Federated Department Stores\, then for a decade as an independent leadership consultant\, and another twenty years as a personal coach and mentor using the Enneagram model of nine personalities. In addition to her published poetry and memoir\, she is the author of five Enneagram-based books that feature fictionalized stories of clients’ transformational journeys\, including the first Enneagram coaching book\, Out of the Box Coaching with the Enneagram. \nWendy Thornton\nThornton\, a Pushcart Prize nominee\, is a prolific freelance writer who helped found the Writers Alliance of Gainesville. Her many works have been published in Riverteeth\, Epiphany\, MacGuffin and other literary journals and books. Her memoir\, Dear Oprah: How I Beat Cancer and Learned to Love Daytime TV\, was published in 2013. Her latest book of essays\, Sounding the Depths: Memories with Music published in 2018. Bear Trapped: Blowback (June 2020) is the most recent mystery in her Bear Trapped Series. She has also published two books of short stories: Arrested Motion (2022) and Hanging On (2023). She teaches community ed writing courses at Santa Fe College in Gainesville.

SUMMARY:J. Elliott presents "The Classic Ghost Story Tradition"
DESCRIPTION:Many of the ghost stories that thrilled Victorian and Edwardian audiences were lost and forgotten. But the classic ghost-story tradition has recently enjoyed a resurgence\, thanks to dedicated anthologists and publishing houses. Hundreds have been republished. \nSupernatural tales are often dismissed as pulp fiction–not considered literature. But did you know that Harriet Beecher Stowe\, Charles Dickens\, Arthur Conan Doyle\, Edith Wharton\, Henry James\, Rudyard Kipling\, Frances Hodgson Burnett\, Virginia Woolf\, and Agatha Christie penned ghost stories? Or that Thomas Hardy penned a zombie poem? Did you know that Freud wrote a thesis on the uncanny? \nWhat exactly does uncanny mean\, anyway? It’s deep and fascinating! Far beyond a tingle or a jump scare\, there are psychological\, historical\, and sociological layers to a solid ghost story. \nCome to the Millhopper branch of the Alachua County Library on October 9 (just before Halloween!) for a talk by ghost-story author J. Elliott. She will present an entertaining and panoramic view of this genre while discussing these topics: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n     Fear of death\n     Desire for safety\n     The uncanny\n     The haunted house\n     The ghost wants justice\, acknowledgment\, or revenge (It’s about POWER.)\n     Leave the relics alone\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nElliott is president of the Writer’s Alliance of Gainesville and the author of three collections of short\, uncanny stories: Ghost Lite\, Tales from Kensington & Other Macabre and Unsettling Offerings\, and Uncanny Stout. Her humorous “Monkey” series about a Buddhist albino with a mid-life crisis\, is set in Alachua County\, Florida. It’s a Haint Blue Christmas follows Monkey Heart and Monkey Mind. Elliott is an artist\, author\, and mom to Basset hounds. Check out her website: https://hedonistichoundpress.com. Additionally\, her character Haint Blue has a blog at https://haintsretreat.com for all things related to Haint’s world.\n\n\nThis talk may be accessed via Zoom at the link below. SUMMARY:Introducing Kindle Vella: The Hot New Publishing Option
DESCRIPTION:Come join us at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday\, June 12\, 2022\, at the Millhopper Library for a discussion of the new subscription service for self-publishers: Kindle Vella. This is a “story subscription service that lets you read serialized works of fiction written specifically for this platform” (https://www.techradar.com/news/amazon-kindle-vella). \nDid you know that Charles Dickens\, Sir Author Conan Doyle\, and Herman Melville all published their original novels in pieces\, either in magazines or journals? Alexandre Dumas stretched out The Count of Monte Cristo into 139 installments. Madame Bovary originally appeared in installments. \nAre you ready to join the historic trend of separating your work into installments for a restless audience? Then\, come to the June 12 meeting to find out how to use Amazon’s new service\, how to upload your work\, what types of work are most popular\, and how you get paid for your work. Don’t miss out. This newest publishing option is taking off fast. \nKindle Vella allows readers to purchase individual chunks of a story and read them when they want. Readers purchase the sections using tokens from Amazon to download a certain number of words. \nRight now\, Kindle Vella seems primarily generated for phones\, but that limitation could change soon. \nThis program will be presented by Marie Q. Rogers (aka Pat Caren) and Wendy Thornton. \nMarie Q. Rogers (Pat Caren)\nRogers studied Literature at Eckerd College and did graduate work at the University of Florida. Her YA novel\, Trials by Fire\, received a 2020 Royal Palm Literary Award. The sequel\, Quest for Namai\, debuted at the 2022 Sunshine State Book Festival. Her dystopian novel\, Season of the Dove can be found on Kindle Vella. Her work has also appeared in Bacopa Literary Review\, Pilcrow & Dagger\, and in the collection\, Local Lives in a Global Pandemic: Stories from North Central Florida. She also posts creative non-fiction on her weblog\, marieqrogers.com. She has served as President of the Writers Alliance of Gainesville\, a judge for the Royal Palm Literary Awards\, and chairman of the Sunshine State Book Festival. \nWendy Thornton\nThornton is a freelance writer who has been published in Riverteeth\, Epiphany\, MacGuffin\, and many other literary journals and books. Her memoir\, Dear Oprah: How I Beat Cancer and Learned to Love Daytime TV\, was published in July 2013.  Her latest book of essays\, Sounding the Depths\, was published in May 2018. The second mystery in her Bear Trapped Series\, Bear Trapped: Blowback\, was published in June 2020\, and the third is due in 2023. She has recently started writing screenplays and has two under consideration in contests. She is currently working on a novel about the Covid epidemic\, Triad\, and a book of essays on how to handle bullying. She teaches writing courses at Santa Fe College\, was nominated for a Pushcart Prize\, and has won many literary awards. In 2009\, she started the Writers Alliance and was the first president of the organization. \nIf you are unable to attend in person\, you may watch via Zoom. SUMMARY:Jack E. Davis to Speak at Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park
DESCRIPTION:Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jack E. Davis brings his brand-new book\, The Bald Eagle: The Improbable Journey of America’s Bird\, to Marjorie Rawlings’ famous citrus grove at the edge of Orange Lake. A book the New York Times calls “rollicking\, poetic and wise.”  The talk will be followed by a book signing and discussion by the author\, music\, and light refreshments. Free with standard park admission. \nJack Davis grew up along the Gulf of Mexico\, which figures prominently in his work. He is the author of eight books including An Everglade Providence: Marjorie Stoneman Douglas and the American Environmental Century\, and most recently\, The Gulf: The Making of an American Sea. The Gulf was hailed as a “non-fiction epic” and won the Pulitzer Prize for history in 2018. The Bald Eagle is again history in Jack Davis’ distinctive style—a broad panorama sweeping through five centuries\, from Native Americans living peacefully with the great bird to the venerated symbol of an ambitious new nation and finally the miraculous escape from near extinction in the 20th century—twice! Scott Weidensaul (A World on the Wing) calls The Bald Eagle “a magnificent tribute…bridging patriotism\, Native Spirituality\, environmental carnage and\, against all odds\, ecological redemption.” \nJack E. Davis is the Rothman Family Chair in the Humanities at the University of Florida. He divides his time between Florida and New Hampshire. \n

SUMMARY:Programs Resume at Millhopper Library: The Juggling Act of Independent Authors
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This is WAG’s first program at Millhopper Library since the COVID pandemic shut it down. Please practice social distancing and follow masking guidelines. If you are unable to attend in person\, join via Zoom (link at the end of this article).\n \n\nFor independent authors\, writing your story is only a part of your juggling act. First\, you identify what you wish to write. Next\, you find the time and a writing routine that is sustainable. After that\, there’s self-promotion to gain the attention of readers\, plus ongoing marketing efforts to sell your books. \nCan you simply rely on your computer expertise and the use of social media? Or do you need to establish a speaking schedule? \nPerhaps it’s a curious balance of all the above and more? Join us on February 13 when independent author William Hatfield will discuss these methods and more. \nFollowing his talk\, Hatfield will be happy to sign a book for you. Check them out on Hatfield’s author page on Amazon. \nHe was born in a small town in northern Michigan and attended Western Michigan University\, obtaining a degree in history and communications. Musical engagements led him to Gainesville\, Florida\, where he continues to live with his wife Karen and their two feline daughters. \nRumor has it\, he may have grown up\, but it seems unlikely. Rumor also has it that on the convention circuit\, no piano is safe from his inclination to cause spontaneous piano-bar singalongs. \nWhether writing science fiction action/adventure or humorous LGBTQ/mysteries based in Key West\, he relishes the opportunity to create interesting and challenging characters that never cease to amuse and surprise him with their inherent independence. \n\nUse this link to join the Zoom meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89973131287?pwd=UWc4WXRaaDl0OWVQWmgwbTBiNHdVQT09\nMeeting ID: 899 7313 1287\nPassword: 316819 \n  \n

SUMMARY:Hugh Suggs to Speak
DESCRIPTION:“Pssst\, want to know a secret?” asks Hugh Suggs. “There’s no bottom you can’t come back from if you are determined to get back up\, are willing to ask for help\, and accept it when it’s offered. \nSuggs will be our speaker on Sunday\, January 9\, at 2:30 p.m.\, in Meeting Room A on the upper level of the downtown library. His poignant story\, “From one Field to Another\,“ won first place for creative nonfiction in the 2019 Bacopa Literary Review. He has now written a powerful memoir dedicated to his illiterate farming father’s struggle\, inside the abject poverty of itinerate farm work\, to raise six children—children who’d go on to become teachers\, county managers\, decorated soldiers\, and successful politicians. \nWritten in novel style in a series of forty vignettes\, the reader walks into Wise’s Drugs with Suggs’s father in 1945 as the storyteller journeys back to his sharecropping roots in order to discover how he became the person who ended up beneath the wheels of a loaded log truck. While he lost his legs in that accident\, he gained an enhanced perspective in his writing. \nHis talk will center around how he combines his open-mic-honed prose poetry with the challenge of writing about a seventy-year journey from his changing perspective; first as that of a gifted child laborer who becomes a budding poet and then as a baggage-carrying\, struggling adult whose bad choices left him beneath those wheels. \nHe will be highlighting this technique by reading excerpts from both his finished manuscript of creative nonfiction\, “Rind and All\,” and performing pieces from a collection of poetry he’s calling “Back on this Side / A Second Chance at Enlightenment\,” whose lines kept finding their way into his memoir’s manuscript. \nThere is free parking around the downtown library and side streets. While the meeting room on the upper level is spacious\, we encourage attendees to wear masks and to socially distance. If the meeting has to change\, we will update this site immediately\, so check back before you go. \nMeeting Room A on Sunday\, January 9\, 2:30 PM – 4:45 PM \n401 East University Ave.\, Gainesville\, FL 32601

SUMMARY:Writer’s Talks at Rawlings House Series Returns to Cross Creek
DESCRIPTION:The Writer’s Talks at Rawlings House Series returns to Cross Creek; under a magnolia tree almost in the shadow of the Pulitzer Prize winner’s home. \nAnn McCutchan brings us her critically acclaimed\, often revealing\, sometimes deeply moving biography of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings herself—The Life She Wished to Live. \n“Come to this biography for the outsized personality\,” Dwight Garner writes in the New York Times. “Stay for a portrait of a woman whose writing meant everything to her.” \nLight refreshments and music begin at 1:30 p.m.; Writer’s Talk at 2:00 p.m. Free with standard park admission. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park at Cross Creek\, Florida. Call 352-466-3672 for more details. \nMade possible by the Friends of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Farm\, the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Society\, and Florida State Parks Department. \nWhat emerges after seven years is the most complete portrait of a very complex life: the long sojourn in Florida’s backcountry and her instinctive affinity for the place and its people; astonishing encounters\, and endearing friendships with the literary galaxy including Ernest Hemingway\, F. Scott Fitzgerald\, Thomas Wolfe\, Robert Frost\, Margaret Mitchell\, and her “magnificent editor\,” Maxwell Perkins; the relationships which helped shape her— from her hugely ambitious mother Ida to her insecure but surprisingly courageous husband Charles Rawlings\, and finally Zora Neale Hurston\, who would bring her to a new understanding of African Americans. Above all\, there is the furiously driven writer. “Rawlings cleared through life as though armed with a machete\,” Jonathan Miles writes in Garden and Gun. “McCutchan gracefully records every chop.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnn McCutchan is the author of five previous books\, most recently Where’s the Moon? A Memoir of the Space Coast and the Florida Dream. She is also a professional musician\, lyricist\, and librettist. Ms. McCutchan lives in Laramie\, Wyoming.

SUMMARY:Author Elizabeth Randall: Creating In-Depth Storylines and Plots for Fiction and Nonfiction
DESCRIPTION:Writers think up many ideas for books and stories and articles; sometimes these ideas just seem to come to us. That is the easy part. The hard part is to work the idea\, to provide it with context and a strong narrative. An awareness of the intuitive and the acquired elements of the craft enables writers to bring depth to their work. \nThis presentation focuses on writing habits\, structure\, pacing\, figurative language\, and writing with emotion and humor. \nRandall is an award-winning book author and a widely published freelance writer. She is a retired English teacher with a Master’s Degree in English Education. \nCheck out her author page on Amazon where her many books are listed: Murder in St. Augustine: The Mysterious Death of Athalia Ponsell Lindsey; Haunted St. Augustine and St. Johns County; Women in White: the Haunting of Northeast Florida; An Ocklawaha River Odyssey\, and The Floating Teacher [out of print]. \nLink to Join this Zoom Meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89973131287?pwd=UWc4WXRaaDl0OWVQWmgwbTBiNHdVQT09\nMeeting ID: 899 7313 1287\nPassword: 316819

SUMMARY:David Eugene Perry: Create Dialogue Fearlessly
DESCRIPTION:David Eugene Perry\, WAG’s guest speaker on May 2\, will discuss the importance of dialog in telling stories. The program will be via Zoom. See link below. \nIf we think back to our favorite books or movies\, it’s often a line of dialog we remember. Lines such as “After all\, tomorrow is another day.” “You had me at Hello.” \nHow do we writers create dialogue that sounds natural? Dialogue that is character-specific? If you want to write lines that grab your readers and give them an emotional experience\, then join us on May 2 and hear how Perry creates dialog fearlessly. \nPerry is the author of the novel Upon this Rock\, of which reviewer Armistead Maupin\, author of Tales of the City\, said\, “Perry has written an elegant\, twisty thriller in which a gay couple investigates a mysterious suicide in a scenic Italian hill town. It’s not hard to imagine that this book could do for Orvieto [Italy] what Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil did for Savannah.” \nAfter graduating from the State University of New York at Fredonia\, Perry worked as a freelance writer and publicist in Washington\, DC\, with stints along the way as a cocktail pianist and a catering waiter for swank Capitol Hill parties and presidential inaugurations (that’s another book\, still underway). In San Francisco\, he wrote for such publications as The Advocate\, American Theatre\, Opera Now\, Omni\, and the San Francisco Examiner. In 1997\, he was offered the job of his childhood fantasies: working his way around the world by ship as editor of the onboard newspaper for the glorious Crystal Symphony. When speaking of his travels\, Perry likes to recount Mark Twain’s line: “Travel is fatal to prejudice\, bigotry\, and narrow-mindedness\, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.” \nWhen not writing\, Perry and his husband\, along with dedicated associates\, run a public relations and design firm with a bevy of interesting clients—from stars to those with starry eyes. They make their home in Palm Springs\, California. For more information\, check out his website\, www.davidperry.com. \nLink to Join this Zoom Meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89973131287?pwd=UWc4WXRaaDl0OWVQWmgwbTBiNHdVQT09\nMeeting ID: 899 7313 1287\nPassword: 316819
