DESCRIPTION:Come to the Millhopper library on November 13 at 2:30 p.m.\, and hear readings from the 2022 Bacopa Literary Review\, the international journal published annually by the Writers Alliance of Gainesville. \nPARKING: If the library lot is full\, you may park in the Florida Credit Union lot at the traffic light immediately south of the library. \n\nLocal authors whose work is featured in the journal will read from their works. Bacopa editors will read prizewinning works in Fiction\, Creative Nonfiction\, Humor\, Formal Poetry\, and Free Verse Poetry. There will also be a presentation of the newest genre in our journal\, the hybrid visual/verbal art form known as Visual Poetry. \nThe Bacopa editorial committee accepted submissions from April 25 through May 30\, 2022. There was no submission fee. From the hundreds of submissions received\, the editors selected the best of the best. Rogers asks you to imagine yourself taken without warning from all you know—family\, home\, friends—to a distant world where people possess abilities you didn’t know existed. Such is Fern’s experience in Trials by Fire\, the first book in Rogers’ two-book science fiction series\, The Long Road to Namai.  \nTrapped in a house fire\, Fern’s only means of escape is by a paranormal gift called “wrashiru.” But once safe\, she’s unable to return home. Her rescuers are highly psychic but lead a primitive lifestyle\, hiding from the alien race that had enslaved them. While dealing with homesickness and grief\, Fern struggles with a new language\, unusual customs\, and unrequited love. Her efforts to fit in often fall short\, and she suffers from isolation and depression. Despite this\, she becomes a contributing member of the community. SUMMARY:Local Authors Series - Elaine Beem Robinson
DESCRIPTION:Note this author reading will be held in the children’s department Story Woods Room. \nElaine Robinson will read from her illustrated poetic story\, Uncommon Scents\, which tells the tale of Marvin\, a polite but bullied and lonely little muskrat\, who lives in a forest where all the other animals are smarter\, swifter\, and more talented than he is. At least that’s what Marvin thinks. But then Marvin meets a brand-new friend who helps him realize just how gifted a modest little muskrat really is. This illustrated story is a tribute to bullied little critters everywhere—those with four feet\, or six feet\, or even only two feet. \n \nElaine Beem Robinson \nAn author and illustrator\, Elaine was born in New Haven\, Connecticut\, and moved to Florida as a child. She holds a BS from the Florida Institute of Technology and a MS from the University of Florida. As a young person\, she was advised against pursuing a career in the arts and instead was directed into the unforgivingly complex world of physics\, biochemistry\, and molecular biology\, where flights of fancy are actively discouraged. Many years followed at the University of Florida working as a research microbiologist\, where she contributed to the plethora of articles written on the misdeeds of bacteria. Now retired\, she is free to write about and draw a world of her own invention\, a world of utter fiction\, generally told in the form of children’s poetry. She lives in Gainesville\, Florida\, along with husband Ron\, Snuffy the Schnauzer\, and several retired racehorses who reside in the backyard and are not asked to do much else. \nUncommon Scents \nOf all the animals in the forest\, Marvin Muskrat was the poorest\, the lowliest and the saddest\, too  All the other animals picked on him because they were smarter\, swifter\, and more courageous than he was. Leastways\, that’s what Marvin believed. But was it really true? \nWith the help of a brand-new friend\, Marvin Muskrat learned just how special he really was. This illustrated story\, told in verse\, is a tribute to all the bullied little critters everywhere—those with four feet\, or six feet\, or even only two feet.

DESCRIPTION:Julie Robitaille will present Romancing the Crime\, the first book in her Gainesville female detective series. Cory Marin\, head of homicide\, is a strong woman with a diverse group of friends and a complicated love life. Her instinct and tenacity make her investigation into the murder of a young college professor a page-turner. Two of the novels in the series are finalists in the Royal Palm Literary Awards. Robitaille is a retired SF College English professor turned mystery writer. \nJW Robitaille \nJulie writes the Cory Marin Mystery series\, which features a strong female detective with a complicated love life and a diverse group of friends. Two of the four novels in the Cory Marin series are finalists in the 2019 Royal Palm Literary Awards. Julie has also published a number of literary novels and a book of short stories. DESCRIPTION:Author\, musician\, and former Mayor-Commissioner Gary Gordon grew up in Gainesville. His first novel\, Crossfire Canyon\, was published by Zebra Books; his two editions of Southern California Travel Smart were published by John Muir. Set in Gatorville and published last year in paperback\, Chief Mican’s Revenge is the satirical tale of the clash between the Mican Indians and the Columbus-DeLeon Construction Company in what might be the first and last Great Mall & Indian War. \nGary Gordon \nGary grew up in Gainesville\, Florida\, worked as a waiter\, record store manager (at Hyde & Zeke Records)\, musician and activist after attending Emory U. and graduating with a journalism degree from Northwestern University in 1974. He served on the Gainesville City Commission and was Mayor-Commissioner from 1985 to 1986. He wrote and produced plays locally and produced the weekly Gary Gordon Comedy Hour on WUFT-FM. He was a writer\, musician\, spoken word artist and producer after moving to Los Angeles in 1991. Among his productions in L.A. was the critically acclaimed play “O.J. Law.” His first novel\, Crossfire Canyon\, was published by Zebra Books. He is the author of the first and second editions of Southern California Travel Smart\, published by John Muir. He is married and returned to Gainesville in October\, 2017. Chief Mican’s Revenge was published in paperback late last year. \nChief Mican’s Revenge \nChris Columbus is a developer with a passion to build malls. DESCRIPTION:Just in time for Thanksgiving\, Cynthia Bertelsen will discuss the challenges of cooking with historic cookbooks\, using hands-on instructions from her book A Hastiness of Cooks and examples from the first American cookbook\, from 1796\, Amelia Simmon’s American Cookery. A skilled cook and culinary historian\, Bertelsen is also the author of Mushroom: A Global History. \nCindy Bertelsen \nTrained as an historian\, librarian\, and nutritionist\, Cynthia D. Bertelsen is the author of Mushroom: A Global History (Reaktion Books U.K.\, 2013) and A Hastiness of Cooks: A Practical Handbook for Use in Deciphering the Mysteries of Historic Recipes and Cookbooks (Turquoise Moon Press\, 2019). She has also published essays\, articles\, book reviews\, and photographs in numerous print and online publications. Volunteering with the Peacock-Harper Culinary History Group at Virginia Tech for over ten years provided her with a deep knowledge of historic cookbooks. And her cooking skills blossomed through years of living and working in various countries\, specifically Mexico\, Paraguay\, Honduras\, Haiti\, Morocco\, and Burkina Faso. Cynthia also attended cooking classes in Paris\, France\, at Le Cordon Bleu École de Cuisine et de Pâtisserie. In 2011\, the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) awarded her a Julia Child Independent Scholar grant to study the impact of immigration on the future of French cuisine.  \n­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­A Hastiness of Cooks: A Practical Handbook for Use in Deciphering the Mysteries of Historic Recipes and Cookbooks\, For Living-History Reenactors\, Historians\, Writers\, Chefs\, Archaeologists\, and\, of Course\, Cooks \nThanks to digitization\, hundreds of historic cookbooks are now available online. However\, several stumbling blocks―archaic language\, obtuse instructions\, bewildering ingredients\, etc.―prevent many dedicated cooks\, novelists\, historical reenactors\, researchers\, and others from benefiting fully from these resources. And that’s where Cynthia Bertelsen’s book comes in. A terrifying plunge from a flying taxi forces Evans to reconstruct his identity while working the brutal case. Evans also finds love amidst masses of homeless Manhattanites\, which the immigrant one percent now mockingly call “the pedestrians.” \nJames Williams \nJames was born in Gainesville\, Florida\, and graduated from GHS with an Associates degree from UF before he began his travels. Since then\, he’s lived\, worked and published miscellanea in Wichita\, Kansas; Boston; New York City; and possibly Shanghai\, China. \nReturning to Florida\, he became writer and editor of The Lake Region Monitor (a Keystone Heights/Melrose weekly newspaper)\, serving for nine years. SUMMARY:Local Author Series - Gail Rose Thompson
DESCRIPTION:Note: Held in Meeting Room B of the Alachua Library Headquarters Branch \nGail Rose Thompson will present her nonfiction Iran from Crown to Turban\, relating tales of life in Iran during the time of the Pahlavi Crown\, the revolution and post-revolutionary times. Her images of the country are far different from what the press tells us. She lived there in the 1970s\, visited two years ago\, and is frequently in contact with friends living there now. Her entertaining stories depict a country of which we are misinformed. \nGail Rose Thompson \nGail grew up in Ontario\, Canada\, where as a young girl she became involved in riding and training horses. She graduated from Hamilton Teachers College and taught school for several years before she traveled to Iran\, where she worked for the Imperial Court of Shah Mohamed Reza Pahlavi during the “Golden Years” of the 1970s. While there\, she witnessed the country’s development as the leading power in the Middle East. Upon her arrival in Richmond\, Virginia from Iran\, she opened a riding school which\, over the next forty years\, developed into a renowned training facility for Hunter/Jumper horses and riders. She returned to Iran in the fall of 2017\, where she met up with old friends and spent time touring and learning about the life in the Islamic Republic of Iran as it is now. She currently lives in Ocala\, Florida. Her memoir All the Shah’s Horses has been well received. \nIran From Crown To Turbans  \nPeople are curious about how life in Iran today\, under the Islamic republic\, differs from life as it was during the reign of Shah Mohamad Reza Pahlavi. Gail Rose Thompson\, who lived there in the 1970s and worked for the imperial court as the Shah’s horse trainer\, has many tales about life during that time and also about the way of life in the country post-revolution. She visited Iran in 2017 after an absence of forty years\, the first ex-employee of the Shah to return. She paints a picture of a beautiful historic country that dates from the fourth millennium BCE\, when the Persian Empire was the most powerful kingdom in the ancient world. Iranians are proud of their heritage and are polite\, hospitable\, and extremely family-oriented. Iran from Crown to Turbans is a fascinating book of stories that will enlighten the reader about a country that has been misrepresented.

What could be better?  Nurses in a hospital notice some unusual qualities about some of the patients—haunted people\, haunted houses. \n \nElliott is an artist and author living in Alachua\, Florida. Tales From Kensington is her second collection of ghost stories\, following Ghost Lite. She is working on a humorous women’s fiction series\, the “Haint Blue\, Adventures Along the Way\,” books set in High Springs\, Florida. \nThe author notes that Tales From Kensington is adult fiction and suggests the appropriate age is 17+.

DESCRIPTION:Skating on Skim Ice is a biography of a time traveler who has journeyed ninety-three years from the past—from the age of Prohibition to the age of smart phones. \nRichard Andrew Gartee\, known to friends and relatives as Dick Gartee\, is the author’s father. He was born in the Roaring Twenties\, survived the Great Depression of the thirties\, enlisted in World War II in the forties\, and raised a family and learned engineering in the Fabulous Fifties. He watched men walk on the moon in the sixties\, constructed factories in the seventies\, designed robotics for manufacturers in the eighties\, and served as a hospital chaplain in the twenty-first century. \nHis biography is more than the story of one man’s trials and joys. DESCRIPTION:Come join us!\n \nEditors of the Bacopa Literary Review will host an afternoon of readings at the Matheson History Museum\, 513 E. University Avenue\, in downtown Gainesville\, on Saturday\, April 14\, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. \nThe event will feature a series of poetry and prose readings by Bacopa editors and Gainesville-area authors whose published works have appeared in Bacopa\, an international print journal published by the Writers Alliance of Gainesville (WAG). \nPresented by the Matheson History Museum\, Bacopa Literary Review\, and WAG\, this afternoon of readings will offer attendees a taste of the local talent reflected in Bacopa. The journal will also be available for purchase. \nWAG will provide light refreshments\, and members will be available to answer questions about WAG\, a Gainesville non-profit organization that promotes\, encourages\, and supports aspiring and experienced writers. \nThis event\, like most of WAG’s programs\, is free and open to the public. \nFor directions to the Matheson\, click on the Google map above right. \n

SUMMARY:Music\, Readings\, and WAG's 2017 Book Project
DESCRIPTION:A crowd turned out on a brisk Sunday afternoon to enjoy music\, readings by WAG members\, and food and drink at Sal’s Place\, a sports bar and restaurant in Northwest Gainesville. \nArthur Crummer\, Ken Booth\, and Janet Barrett Suggs provided the music\, and about a dozen WAG members read essays or selections in poetry\, fiction\, or memoir. \nA big thanks to Wendy Thornton for coordinating the event\, to Ken Booth for setting up the sound equipment\, and to Sal’s Place for providing the venue. \nDonated books\nWe are also grateful to Roz Miller who organized WAG’s Holiday Children’s Book Project. Many of those attending the Sal’s Place event donated books or cash. \nRoz (WAG)\, and Kristen (Peaceful Paths)\nOn December 18\, all donations were delivered to Peaceful Paths\, a non-profit organization that helps children caught in the middle of stressful domestic-violence situations. Peaceful Paths provides a safe place for women and their children\, away from their abusers. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, December 9\, authors Bonnie T. Ogle and Judith A. Barrett discussed their new children’s books in the Story Woods room of the Alachua County Library Headquarters. \n \nBonnie Ogle reading from Arthur the Arthropod\nArthur the Arthropod by Ogle. Feeling quite vulnerable when his shell comes off\, the young centipede Arthur tries to overcome his feelings of inferiority by bragging. Along the way\, he discovers he is part of a very large family that includes his neighbors\, a mosquito\, a dragonfly\, and even a crawfish. He receives delightfully repetitive advice from his wise Mama\, and ultimately realizes that he has everything he needs! \nThe Sounds and Smells of Christmas by Ogle. Would a king be born in a dark\, moldy cave\, surrounded by smelly animals? Would shabby\, dirty people be allowed near a king? Only a king who loves His people\, young or old\, pretty or ugly\, rich or poor. Enter the stable and experience the real sounds and smells of the Nativity and discover that Jesus didn’t come to sit on a fancy throne. He came to be with ordinary people like me. \nOgle is a retired first grade teacher\, now teaching children at a natural history museum. She is a huge fan of lepidoptera (butterflies) and herptiles\, especially frogs. \nJudith Barrett reads from Pink Baby Alligator\nJudith Barrett’s first book\, Pink Baby Alligator\, is a story she told her young granddaughter\, who then requested the story be written down so she could read it for herself. Soon\, the story passed through many grandchildren\, proving particularly meaningful for her autistic grandchild. \nPink Baby Alligator by Barrett. Pink in a world of green. From the very beginning\, it’s obvious that Rose is different. As a lone pink alligator in a family of green ones\, she stands out when all she wants to do is blend in. With the support of Mama Alligator and her friends\, Rose sets off on an adventure to discover how to use her special gift to create a place where everyone is included! \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, November 19\, Susie H. Baxter was the featured speaker in the Alachua County Library’s Local Author Series. She discussed her recently published book\, Pumping Sunshine. Believing that everyone has a story to tell\, Baxter also encouraged those in the audience to write about their own lives. \nAn Alachua County resident\, Baxter has deep roots in Suwannee County where she grew up on a farm near the Suwannee River\, and where she was known as Susanette Howell. \nAfter a career in health-science publishing as an acquisitions editor\, she now serves as creative nonfiction editor for Bacopa Literary Review and teaches memoir writing in the community education program at Santa Fe College. She is also the author of Write Your Memoir\, One Story at a Time and C.G. & Ethel\, A Family History. \nThe November 19 program was held at the Headquarters Library. Refreshments (homemade cookies made from a family recipe in the book) and a book signing followed the program.

O’Connor is first on the program for the Alachua County Library’s new Local Author Series. \nOn September 16\, O’Connor will discuss her debut novel\, American River: Tributaries\, which follows the entwined lives of three immigrant families as they settle along this river in Northern California during the turbulent 1960s. \nO’Connor\, who grew up in Northern California\, has degrees in art\, art history\, and American history and taught art history at the University of Florida and Santa Fe College. \nShe is also the author of the non-fiction book\, Lost Cities of the Ancient Southeast\, and she and Gary Monroe coauthored Florida’s American Heritage River: Images from the St. Johns Region.  \nO’Connor resides in Micanopy and currently serves as vice president of the Writers Alliance of Gainesville. \nThis program will be held in Meeting Room A\, Fourth Floor\, of the Headquarters library\, 401 E.
