SUMMARY:Civil Rights Era to the Present
DESCRIPTION:The fourth program in The Other Book series\, Civil Rights Era to the Present\, will be held on April 12\, 2025\, from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Each program in this series has been held at a different location\, and this one will be at The Cotton Club\, 837 SE 7th Avenue\, Gainesville\, FL 32601. \nSponsored by the Alachua County Community Remembrance Project (ACCRP)\, the series was developed to help fill some of the gap left in Florida’s public education. This educational opportunity is especially valuable for those writing about history\, inequity\, and/or cross-cultural relationships within our country. \nSeveral WAG members have said they benefited from one or more of the first three programs: \n\nDispelling the Myths: Pre-Colonial Africa\, held in January at the Harn Art Museum\nEnslavement in Alachua County\, held in February at the Haile Homestead\nJim Crow in Alachua County\, held in March at the Alachua County Administration Building\n\n\n\nRegistering for the April program is suggested but is not required. All are invited to attend. The courses are offered free\, but donations are appreciated.

SUMMARY:Educational Opportunity Begins in January 2025
DESCRIPTION:Did you know?\n\n\n\nBefore schools were integrated in Alachua County\, Black teachers taught from two books… the official book sanctioned by the school board\, and the other book\, teaching the truth about Black history. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWriters may take advantage of a free educational opportunity about Black history that begins in January. All are invited to attend. The course is free\, although a donation of $5 per class is suggested. SUMMARY:Gainesville Reads Program
DESCRIPTION:The Writers Alliance of Gainesville (WAG) is pleased to announce our partnership with The Lynx Bookstore in their Gainesville Reads Program\, a month-long community reading festival surrounding one book. \nThe September book is The Heat Will Kill You First by Jeff Goodell. \n“In The Heat Will Kill You First\, Jeff Goodell brings a mix of fantastic storytelling\, lucid science communication\, and eternal optimism in detailing the profound threat we face with the climate crisis and what we can still do about it.”―Michael Mann\, Presidential Distinguished Professor\, University of Pennsylvania and author of The New Climate War \nClimate change affects every level of our existence from basic survival to environmental sustainability\, and WAG wants to encourage our youngest citizens to get involved in the fight against climate change. \nToward that end\, our Teen Lit Awards\, part of the Sunshine State Book Festival\, is meant to not only make students aware of the looming issue of climate change but to give them an opportunity to raise their voices and win scholarship money. Details about the contest\, which is open to all middle and high school students\, may be found on the Teen Lit Contest page of the Sunshine State Book Festival website. Check it out! \nAlso\, WAG members and educators Jenny Dearinger and Sue Blythe have developed lesson plans for elementary school teachers to help educate their students about the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The 41-page PDF file may be downloaded at www.jennydearinger.com. \n
