SUMMARY:WAG Members to Vote on Revised Bylaws
DESCRIPTION:A bit of history: On November 16\, 2008\, the Bylaws for the Writers Alliance of Gainesville (WAG) were presented in writing to WAG’s Executive Committee\, signed by then-President Wendy Thornton\, and subsequently approved unanimously by the general membership. Since that date\, WAG has grown from about 50 members to over 200; and the Bylaws have been updated twice\, once in 2015\, and again in 2020. \nAt a June 9\, 2024\, meeting\, the WAG Board approved the latest revision which includes a Code of Conduct for Board Members. WAG members will be asked to approve these Revised Bylaws at the next monthly meeting on Sunday\, July 14\, 2024. \nPlease click here to review the Revised Bylaws. Note that additions/changes are shown in red. In addition to the Code of Conduct for Board Members (Section 5 E) and a few other minor additions\, the document has been made more friendly. For example\, at the suggestion of a highly respected member who was in the original 50\, the word shall is now will when it relates to the duties of numerous volunteer positions. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Top Ten Ways to Market Your Book for Free
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: YOU MAY VIEW THIS PRESENTATION HERE: \nhttps://youtu.be/MFOCMzIaFXA \n  \nAuthor and blogger Jolene MacFadden will share with you the Top Ten Ways to Market Your Book for Free on Sunday\, May 3\, at 2:30 p.m. via Zoom. This online program is in lieu of her scheduled Millhopper Library presentation. \nIf you are an author or plan to be\, don’t miss this. To join\, just click on the link below and use the password provided. You will be prompted to download the Zoom App to your computer. \n\nLink to join Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us04web.zoom.us/j/75817114458?pwd=S2dGL3oralAvOTBzb3Fkc1BzOHcxdz09\nMeeting ID: 758 1711 4458\nPassword: 4eLvnn\nZoom is also being used by WAG’s critique pods. To learn more about Zoom\, click here.\n\nMacFadden promotes North Florida area authors through her website\, North Florida Writers Tour. She has already interviewed and promoted several WAG members and is looking for more book authors to highlight. \nShe is the author of Insider’s Guide to Campground Hosting in Florida Parks\, a resource book about volunteer workamping on Florida’s public lands. According to workamper.com\, the word workamper was trademarked in 1987. It’s an individual who travels the country and works in a campground and lives in an RV. \nMacFadden travels the state of Florida in an old Class A RV with her mom and sometimes with her youngest daughter. They started visiting state parks\, just taking pictures and videos and writing reviews. But they enjoyed the experience so much that they decided to become volunteers at the state parks. In return\, they get to stay free for up to four months at campsites. \n“When researching the material for my book\,” MacFadden said\, “I found that there are opportunities and needs in all of Florida’s public lands and wildlife management areas. We have also volunteered in a couple of national parks\, forests\, county parks and national wildlife areas\, so I have enough material for a few more books. Along with the volunteering\, I am learning more about nature photography\, creating handcrafted bead and wire jewelry\, videography\, and our environment.” \nShe lives in Lake City\, Florida\, and is currently doing research to write a history of the people and events that have happened at the newly renovated\, historically registered Blanche Hotel in downtown Lake City. \nIn her spare time\, MacFadden says she writes articles for sixteen different websites including her own: https://jolenesbooksandmore.com; https://websandblogsforwriters.com; https://swconlinestore.com; https://southernladiesadventures.com.

SUMMARY:Marketing Coalition Meeting: Podcasts
DESCRIPTION:Podcasts\, what are they? Why they help authors build followers\, and how do you make and distribute them?\nAuthor Virginia R. Bensen will demonstrate how she creates podcasts with equipment she bought for less than $100. She’ll discuss from personal experience how important it is for authors to create their brand\, and that podcasts are just one of the tools that is needed to successfully market themselves and their books. She promises we’ll have some hands-on fun while learning about podcasting\, and actually create a podcast during the meeting. Members who have smart phones should bring them. After we create our first Writers Alliance podcast\, you’ll be able to call in on your phone and listen. There is no charge to listen to the podcast.\n\nRemember\, this Marketing Coalition meeting will be held in Meeting Room B of the downtown Library Headquarters\, 401 E. University Avenue Saturday March 7th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Create a Following Online. What Works. What Doesn't.
DESCRIPTION:Author\, nutritionist\, and fitness guru Caroline Anaya\, who writes an online newsletter\, “FitBits\,” is WAG’s March 1 speaker. In her newsletter\, now in its seventh year\, Anaya writes about food\, nutrition\, and her life. \nAt the March meeting\, she will expand on relevant sales lore\, such as “Sell yourself\, and your product will sell itself\,” refining it for writers who would rather spend their time writing than marketing. But the techniques can apply to anyone who wishes to gain a following with the use of the Internet (visual artists\, for example). \nAnaya’s professional years involved research in developing the original Minimum Daily Requirements with the USDA and an infant formula for use in Nigeria under UNICEF. She helped set up standards for fishery products for the USDI. She then turned to industry-based food technology\, developing Metrecal™\, the first diet food\, and many other products. She has published a dozen scientific papers and articles. \nHer autobiography\, The Bite of History: Patriarchy Messing with Me and Food for 85 Years\, has received excellent reviews. One reviewer wrote\, “The story of an intrepid woman sincerely sharing the whole spectrum of her life without shying away from the grueling\, even horrible encounters and tough choices. The nutritional information in the appendix is very enlightening. You’ll never look at the USDA nutritional pyramid the same way again.” \nAnaya stays healthy with light meals of natural foods\, deep sleep\, daily yoga\, and rides her tricycle down a wooded trail near her home.

SUMMARY:2020 Sunshine State Book Festival Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, January 13\, 2019\, Sunshine State Book Festival chair\, Mallory O’Connor\, assisted by Richard Gartee\, presented plans for the festival to WAG members and guests. \n \n“The Sunshine State Book Festival is the largest project WAG has ever undertaken\,” Mallory told the audience. “To be the huge success we want it to be\, we need participation from the entire WAG membership.” \nThree days of events are planned for January 2020\, beginning with an opening reception Friday\, January 24\, the Book Festival January 25\, and ending on Sunday\, January 26\, with a caravan tour of sites associated with Gainesville’s Literary Heritage. \nWAG\, which is producing the festival\, has received support from Santa Fe College and the SF Foundation\, who are giving us use of the beautiful Santa Fe College Fine Arts Hall to hold Saturday’s Book Festival. The Matheson Museum will host the Friday night reception and is planning an exhibition on historical Gainesville literary figures. \nWAG authors will have first opportunity to register for festival exhibit space where they can sell and sign their books. Richard stated that online registration would open to WAG members February 1\, 2019\, and then to authors statewide a few weeks later. He urged those who want to sell books to claim their space as soon as registration opens. \nMallory gave audience members an idea of the scope of the undertaking as she presented a list of the various committees needed to pull off a book festival. “These are not one-person jobs\,” she noted. “Nearly every committee needs multiple volunteers.“ She listed committees where WAG members are needed and invited members to pitch-in: \n\nFunding: writing grants\, recruiting sponsors and community partners\nPublicity and marketing\n Social media\nOutreach: promoting the festival to book clubs\, schools\, teachers\, etc.\nAuthor registration\nBook raffle: (festival door prizes)\nPrinter coordinator (manage festival printing needs)\nDay of festival volunteer facilitator/ trainer\nChildren’s book area\, (storytelling\, craft activities)\nFestival set-up and take-down\nFestival follow-up/survey evaluation committee\n\nPlease select a committee where you can contribute your talents\, and contact Mallory to volunteer. \nRichard concluded the program with a demonstration of the festival website\, which is now up and running.
